so far I haven't cared much and hope the hard drives won't crash.

I don't have too many files on the computer and most are stored redundantly on usually two or more computers anyways so it isn't too bad.

once I start creating a decent collection of lossless files I'll keep a backup copy on my computer in japan though. I'm sure there's room for quite a few albums on the 720GB of hard drive space in that thing.

I don't have a (re)writable DVD drive and too lazy to go buy one... and too lazy to use the CD-RW drive to burn backups (though I have like 1000+ CD-R blanks. lol) so I guess the hard drive is the way to go.

You could get yourself an ungodly number of free web hosting accounts and upload one flac file to each

Ugh, did some bad bad math.

Anyway, because of our high "casette tax" that we pay for all media the hard drive solution is about as cost efficient as are the DVD+/-R.

- I had a HD that was broken after only 1 year of regular use..

- But I have also a 8 years old HD, and its still working (loud, but it works)

- I had some DVD-R's that stopped working after 1 year !!!

- I have some 5 year old CD-R's, full with scratches, and they still work...

I store all my stuff @ DVD-R's, and all favorites @ my HD as well !!!

If you wanna know if a DVD-R is a "good quality" one...

Dont make ya choice by the brand, but the producer !!!

Buy DVD-R's produced by Mitsubishi chemicals (MC), Taiyo Yuden (TY) or Ritek...

Verbatim and TDK use this ones for their product lines as well !!!

But this does not mean that all blanks of Verbatim & TDK are produced by the 3 "good" companys above...

Bye

You mean RAID1 not 0 (as that's striping and worst for backup).

I use mirroring, external firewire harddrives, DVD-R, and CD-R, and DVD-RAM. Basically I don't trust any of those methods so I just use them all.

Actually I'm thinking of using MiniDV for backup using my camcorder, as it's cheap storage and should be decent speed over firewire. Is this a bad idea?
