Default Foobar--is 2000 the latest? Buggy

Foobar vs. ITunes really is no contest sound-wise. I was skeptical initially but it truly is superior. Why that should be the case I have no idea.

That said, getting a nice looking and bug-free version of Foobar for me at least has been a time consuming and somewhat fruitless endeavor. When I close Foobar, I get a bunch of programming errors and other weirdness. While with some of the GUI mods I found Foobar looks OK, it's still got a long way to go before I reach what I saw some people's configurations looked like at the Head-Fi meet I went to.

Anyway, is Foobar2000 the latest version? Is there a site that has the best/most current files for this anyone would recommend? I pretty much need to uninstall the thing and start from scratch with it it seems.

No, 2007 is the latest version, but it's pretty hard to find. Try google.

Foobar2000 is the name of the program. The latest version is 0.9.4.3, if I remember correctly.

Download available here: http://foobar2000.org/

yes 0.9.4.3 is the latest version. For me though it's been bug-free for quite a long time now (a few years), or at least I haven't come across any problems in my everyday use of it. Does foobar2007 even exist?

Nope. Sorry, but I couldn't pass that one up. The "2000" in the name, IIRC, doesn't mean anything, it just sounds cool.

Foobar is a lot of work. If you just want good sound and an easy interface, try WinAMP with kernel streaming/ASIO plug-ins. Look into the various mp3/FLAC/ogg plugins too, as the unoffical ones support ReplayGain etc.

foobar is a lot of work? Maybe I'm missing something? I have foobar + ASIO plug in running rather effortlessly...

Well, okay, I should say that making Foobar even close to usable with a large library is very hard.

The new panels_ui makes things a lot better, especially now you can easily download other people's skins. Of course you manually have to gather all the plug-ins needed for each skin.

Lack of an on-the-fly playlist is the biggest issue remaining. You can't easily just queue up a load of files into a temporary playlist, before going off to browse some more like you can in Winamp. Unless, I'm missing something...

One other issue is gapless playback. Has it been fixed in 0.9? In 0.8, it either was not gapless or crashed Foobar. Then again, Winamp does not have built-in support for running ReplayGain analysis, you have to use other programs. Unicode support has only really just got usable too.

I suppose it depends what you want. If you want either a super-simple player and use your filesystem to organise your music, or a super customisable GUI and ridgid workflow, Foobar is your player. If you want a fairly customisable GUI with a flexible workflow and good usability, or if you don't want to spend hours customising but need a media library, WinAMP is the way to go.

Using 0.9.4.2, gapless playback is, well, gapless as far as I can tell. I've never had a problem with it. It also does on-the-fly playlists as well.

Time to upgrade.

you can right click tracks and choose "Add to playback queue". I can't remember if you can view the playback queue without an extra component.
