You still got it wrong I'm afraid:
The volume level doesn't affect the Bit-Perfect output, unless the volume is below "30".
yes, you heard it right, it is possible to keep all the data that was in the original signal while lowering the volume.
Semantics. The practical question is will a sqeezebox give a digital output that can be decoded by a DTS or HDCD receiver/DAC when playing such encoded
files ?

The answer is yes, and has been answered at great length over at the slim devices forums
Short answer
I've just verified that ripping with EAC using FLAC works for HDCD - yay!
My setup consists of an SB3 with a Denon 3805 A/V amp. The 3805 has the ability to decode HDCD. The digital output of my SB3 is connected to the digital in of my Denon 3805, that is, I'm using my 3805 as a decoder and DAC for my SB's digital audio. When I play any of my ripped and FLAC encoded HDCD's, e.g. Dreamland by Madeleine Peyroux, the Denon 3805 indicates that it is playing an HDCD.

"If the volume control is enabled in the SqueezeBox then the digital information provided by slimserver is manipulated by the firmware and output through the digital output. This manipulation may cause some loss of information. If the digital volume control is switched off then the SqueezeBox simply plays what it receives and your DAC does the job it did before when it was directly connected to a CD transport."
I just bought a Sqeezebox today . . . I can't believe I've been messing around with and Airport Express when this existed all along. It's really wonderful.
My question is, is the above quote the definitive word on the bitperfect/digital volume control issue? I.e., is 100% volume not bitperfect when the volume control is enabled? If not, then obviously anything even slightly less than 100% isn't bitperfect. But if this is wrong, i.e., if 100% volume with the control enabled is indeed bitperfect despite this report to the contrary, to what level below 100% does the stream remain bitperfect? Where can we find a definitive answer, if the quote above isn't it?
Thanks!
Simon
I just found this post at HA. It is possible to losslessly lower the volume digitally to a certain point -- the question is, does the SB3 allow this?
