I just recently purchased the 710, installed it today and love it, music sounds so crisp. Anyway, I am having one problem that I have noticed so far. Besides listening to music I also game a lot, one of the games I play the most is World of Warcraft. When I'm playing I hear a faint popping noise in the backgroud, I only notice in the game, but not music. Also, some of the sounds sound different, like when a horse is galloping, it sounds like it is skipping, or pausing. When I used my onboard sound it wasn't like that, its was natural.
I have my onboard sound disabled in the bios, and I have tried various drivers, they all seem to do the same thing. Right now I am using the v473b's for my drivers. I listen to games and music using headphones (Audio Technica ATH A-500), so it's a little easier to notice flaws .
Computer specs in case you need to know....
AMD 3700+
2Gb Memory
Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb
Windows XP Pro
If you guys have any ideas or anything that I could do to make it better I would sure appreciate it.
I use the AV710 and its not that flash in World of Warcraft. I only ever hear about every 2nd or 3rd shot my hunter shoots :\ Like you said, its very much a music card. Ive decided to buy an x-fi xtrememusic so that i can have the best of both worlds. Unfortunately 'Creative' are the only option when it comes to gaming.
If you can spare it, newegg has OEM Audigy 2zs for $6x.00 right now on the front page.
Btw, check the fps with sound on, and sound off. Though you have a nice system, it would be interesting to see how much of a bottleneck the chaintech might be.
The AV-710 is not bad at all for gaming...but it is really picky about drivers. It does not work with the new QSound 3d crap they switched to. To get 5.1 3d positional audio from most games you must turn on the feature in the drivers (Sensaura, immerzio, qsound, whatever they're calling it this week). Otherwise, you only get 5.1 from a select few games like Freelancer.
The last good driver for this card and gaming in 5.1 "3d hardware" sound was driver version 1.43d, which can be found right here as of 2 minutes ago. These are stable, sound as good as any other and the 3d stuff works the best you will get on an AV-710.
Right after this set of drivers the versions jumped into the 300's. They switched to the unsupported QSound over good old Sensaura and the AV-710 DOES NOT work with it anymore.

Thanks for the info about the 2Zs, I will look into that. Also, I'm not sure how to check the ingame fps of WoW, once I find out I will do so and post back, I'm interested to see if there is a bottleneck to.

If you just run a 2 speaker setup, nevermind.
I tried the drivers you suggested and no change, still the same popping noise and the sound cuts out completely in parts. :/
I had some pretty bad position and distance effects in WoW with my AV-710 too. Don't know how to fix that. I just went back to my trusty C-Media based cards and they sound great.
To check your in game frame rate in WoW, hit CTRL+R (again to toggle it off)...check in the controls setup to confirm if that doesn't work for you. There is a key bind for it though, and it will display in the lower center of your screen.
