Default Budget cmi8788 or splurge?

Hi I need some advice for getting some good sound out of my desktop. From what I read the cmi8788 is cream of the crop for sound cards.

So would I notice much difference between a b-Enspirer cmi8788 or a more expensive ht omega claro cmi8788? I mostly watch movies on sennheiser hd595's. I don't have surround speakers so I was thinking it might be a moot point to get such a high end card that is made for 7.1 when I don't have that. Thanks.

I very much doubt it under most conditions. Both are great cards, and the only reason why I would suggest the Claro over the b-Enspirer is that the Claro has solid caps rather then elecrolytics (more durability) and both optical and coax out with full 24/192 support (that can be played at the same time). Both are very nice to have, but if neither mean much to you, save the money. They use the same CMEDIA drivers as a foundation. IF you can swing it, go for the Claro (or Claro Plus since the upgraded opamp for the front channels will benefit your phones) and enjoy. That is the card I am getting for the great digital out selection.

Nobody has stated this, but it seems like the claro+ is the best card on the market right now for just sound quality(maybe not with games). It has the cmi8788 and upgraded opamps along with other high quality components. Shouldn't this make it sound better than the asus xonar, auzen prelude, and an xfi modded for movies and music? I think I'm just going to splurge and buy the damn thing.

It's not THE best (Lynx, RME, arguably E-MU, and a few others are better, but most are much more expensive and most offer less features), but for the money and the features it offers, you will be happy. The sum of its parts is great, and based on the benchmarks and subjective reviews, implementation sounds great as well. I say go for it. I doubt you will get any better unless you go nuts and go for a Lynx or RME... but when you plunk that much on the table, you might as well go for a standalone DAC. Anyway, I digress. Have fun with your claro+
