I own the CM1 but I think would recommend the Dynaudio MC 15 plugged directly into the DAC-1 and optionally with a Velodyne Minivee 10 in the corner (my picture shows a Microvee).

The Dynaudio are a bit more money than the CM1, but are active so you don't need to buy the amp

There's been so much discussion of the Apogee Duet, why not it and you amp/phone choice?

x3 on the Apogee Duet. Using mine with K701 and A2 speakers with great results. Highly recommended.

Great thread. Giving me many ideas about how to spend money I don't have. I think I am going to pick up a pair of AudioEngine A5s first and then add a DAC down the road. Even the A5s by themselves should sound much better than what I'm using now.

I have the Apogee Duet breakaway line out running directly into some Audiengine A5s, and I couldn't be happier.

The headphone-out stage of the Duet is great, too.

Simple, relatively inexpensive set up; pro/audiophile results. Can't go wrong. Apogee is a great company.

Plus, serious austerity points, amirite?

I am now adding a silver RSA Raptor into this chain. I believe it will give the 701 some more body.
