Default SOLD: Apogee Mini-DAC

Apogee Mini-DAC | Sweetwater.com

^^ Purchased this from them on May 27, 2007 at that price.

Apogee Electronics: Products: Mini-DAC

Specs/ info

For background info and context, my Ebay handle is wemdog1

Obviously it's now past the year long manufacterer's warranty. It comes 100 percent complete with all cables, accessories, and instructions that originally shipped from the manufacterer.

It's in excellent overall condition and has always performed flawlessly for me. I'd be tempted to call it mint outright were it not for the less than sexy hole in the back covered by tape where the optional USB slot can go (You can buy these) and the optical audio jack is missing the piece of plastic that covers it but it functions perfectly. Just take a little extra care when connecting an optical cable in that jack and it's fine and secures normally.

Reason for selling: Upgraditis.

Asking price: $550 American.

Shipping: $20

It will be insured parcel or priority mail, whichever is cheaper. It will be packaged like Fort Knox.

Preferred methods of payment: Postal money order or Pay Pal from a confirmed/verified address account.

USA Only for now.

Someone asked a good question via PM:

Quote:

does it take usb? it looks like it does.
It does, but you'd have to buy the USB option card and probably install it yourself which is right in the instructions. Very easy to do.

The problem here is: Those cards seem scarce. You might have to contact Apogee directly for one.

EDIT: Another excellent round of questions that may benefit others:

What was there originally? Is the tape "factory" or was there some sort of plastic plug that has since disappeared?
This was how the unit came to me. I remember looking at that and being a little perplexed. I called Sweetwater and double checked that they hadn't accidentally sent me a refurb or something like that.

Some folks have had a "nicer" looking gray plug and some such but this is how mine came to me.

It isn't the sexiest looking thing in the world but that side of the unit rarely gets exposed anyways. Thankfully the tape protects the insides from any dust.

Again, is it the plastic plug that sometimes covers the toslink jacks, or is there a little plastic piece that moves out of the way when you connect, or what?
There was a plastic piece that moved out of the way when you connect. It came off almost too easily way back when I first installed the unit a year ago. I actually can put that in the package and if someone has a delicate touch they could probably get it back on there. I couldn't do it. It doesn't appear to be "snapped" or broken as best I can tell.

This has no bearing on the function of the unit.

Thank you. I've been looking at the apogee duet, but was hoping for additional inputs, and stand alone capability. This might fit the bill.

Do you know if this has an analog input straight to the amp for stand alone amp use as well?
It does not. You would need a Mini-Me for that kind of function. Many people couple both Mini Mes and Mini-DACs together for exactly the kind of setup you're talking about.

The Duet is a darned nice piece in its own right, that's for sure.

Lastly, I assume no firewire or USB in without optional cards from apogee?
Correct. The hole with the tape over it is where the USB jack would be if you installed the optional (and scarce) USB optional card. I can't find them anywhere so I suspect whoever buys this is going to have to contact Apogee directly or see if they can get lucky on Ebay or some other aftermarket outlet.

If that fails then I believe they make either coax and/or optical - USB adapters.

If you click on the last picture in my pictures lineup you can see very clearly what it looks like.

Don't need it. Thanks.

FWIW, I've searched high and low and it's my understanding that that USB cards that go with this thing are essentially no longer available unless someone gets lucky on Ebay, audiogon, here, or some other aftermarket venue.

Just so any prospective buyer is aware of that going in.

Another excellent question someone asked me via PM that may be of use to all:

Quote:
Can I connect the mini-dac to Left/Right unbalanced RCAs?
How can it be done?
You sure can.

3 pin XLR male plug to female RCA type jack

^^ Buy two of these, put them on a pair of RCA cables, connect accordingly and you're set.
