FS: Class D Amp for K1000s>>>>>SOLD
Hi,
I am selling a custom made class D solid state amp optimized for use with AKG K1000 headphones. It uses Hypex modules designed by Bruno Putzeys, who also designed the iQube and the Channel Islands Audio D100/200 amps . The Hypex website is at Hypex Electronics B.V.. This amp uses the upgraded Hypex HG power supply and the UCD180AD modules. Output per channel is 90w into 8ohms/180w into 4ohms. The modules have DC sensing circutry for the outputs and overload protection. The only mod to the original factory module was bypassing one stock coupling cap. This is a common mod for this amp. As long as your preceding stage is not putting out DC you will be fine, benefitting in the improvement in clarity.
The amp is compact and built into a high quality US made, black aluminum case with contrasting silver handles. The back has Cardas binding posts and high quality RCA inputs. It is wired for single ended inputs but the modules support balanced inputs and could be rewired to do that. There is a mains switch on the back and also a standby switch on the front. The front panel has a 4 pin XLR jack which is designed to couple with the stock K1000 XLR connector.
The sound is remarkably clear and neutral with my K1000's. There is a ton of detail and ambience retrieval. The sound is accurate but not clinical. Guitar, cymbals and like instruments sound wonderful. It is dead quiet with a very black background.
If you own speakers it should also happily drive them also. It would probably compare well with the Pass Labs or Red Wine equipment based upon it's construction and design philosophy. I do not think that the amp will be the limiting factor in most systems.
I am asking $525 shipped in CONUS. PayPal preferred.
Headphones not included :-)
Would consider a pair of ECC32's in trade...
Best,
Paul

Just a comment on the Hypex modules:
I have tried many different "digital" amps, including several Tripath (flea- and higher-powered), Sharp digital, NuForce Icon, Yamaha-chip-based amp, and ICE-powered.
I now own a custom passive-volume integrated amp using these same Hypex 180ad modules, and it is to date the best I've heard from digital amps for any kind of decent price. I demo'd a pair of Totem Rainmakers I was selling with this amp (they like power), and the buyer said it was the best he'd heard from them.
This looks like a nice build, and I say this is a steal at this price!

Since it's optimized for the K1000, it should synergize well with the K701 as well, right?

I am fairly certain that if you plugged in K701s into that amp, they would blow up
Nah, I'm just kidding, they wont explode. But keep in mind, K1000s are mini speakers, and thus need a lot more power to drive them than regular headphones, basically a speaker amp.
Mourip, sorry to hijack your thread, but I noticed you live in DC. Any chance we will see you here Washington, D.C. Looking To Meet and Test!
I really would love to listen to the K1000s...

Sold the amp.
Thanks for the comments. It really does work wonderfully well with the K1000's.
Best,
Paul
