Why did everyone on here make it sound like I NEEDED a threaded cable for my Q40's?
My stock cable went out, and I've been sitting around waiting for M-Audio to e-mail me back. I assumed I NEEDED a threaded cable since that's what the Q40 cable is, but my dad went to Radioshack today and got a 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable for under $10 and it works fine. It fits into the Q40's nice and tight, and I don't think there's a difference in sound at all. And to think I almost spent $50 on a threaded cable...

That's what happens when you let government run headphone-cable replacement! I've been trying to tell everybody how worried I am, but nobody sees the slippery slope we're on!!!

When I still used the mini stereo jack on my headphones I had cables without the threaded mini stereo so I didn't have to pay the exorbitant price Ultrasone has for its shorter cables. It only works if the plug is thin enough (Most mini stereo plugs need to be shaved thinner) and although it is a tight hold just from insertion there is less protection against bending and of course whenever you snag it it will come out.

Looks like I'm not getting my cut from M-Audio... The newbies are getting smarter.

It's not too late, guys.
OP: The Radioshack cable you bought will cause tinnitus. And rusting. Yes. Rusting. Of whatever's oxidisable in the headphone.

QFT.
And it will cause your source to rust too. Don't forget that. Plastic rusts doncha know?
That will teach you to be thrifty!
Hey guys, what will we do if he actually returns the cable to buy the $50 one?

No, the source doesn't rust, if it's a lossless file. If you had lossy, the cables would cause a deterioration in sound quality over time, as the lossy file gradually loses bit after bit when played. The cable, being of inferior quality, steals bits for itself, and takes bytes out of your music, so to speak.
A lossless file, on the other hand, was originally recorded onto a medium made of XeF6Pt. That's right, xenon hexafluoroplatinate. Your Radio Shack cable knows it can't mess with a noble gas compound-recorded piece of music. It's way out of its league. The music is unmolested as it passes bewteen the source and your headphones.
You heard it here first, folks.
