I hope this post doesn't stir up too much trouble...
I'd like to hear from anyone who believes that burning in a set of cans is not a myth.
Specifically, what you thought of the cans when you first bought them and when did you notice the burn-in (at how many hours) and what did you notice? For example a boost in the 5k range or a cut in the 150Hz, etc.
thanks

Doing a search you will get many different opinions.I think most if not all headfiers that have had many different cans know that burn in is real, whether psychological or the cans themselves. As for the audible change, it is different for different cans. Some don't even change much if at all.
When Mercury first delivered my K701 (I noticed the brazen UPS chariot parked outside my office), they were made of lead and sounded horrible. However, after six or seven eons of head time on Hercules, they turned to gold and sounded like the Sirens that almost lured Odysseus to his maritime doom. Then Zeus, posing as Dick Oshler, tried to trick me out of my newly burned-in K701. But Minerva secretly gave me a magical pair of DT880/2005 that looked just like the K701--but still sounded terrible, like DT880/2005 are wont to sound. Zeus unwittingly took the decoy and has since foresworn any future use of AKG products.
So, I guess it was at about seven eons that I noticed everything settle down on the K701. Seriously, though, it was after about 300 hours that I noticed how much practically EVERYTHING had improved on my K701, most notably an ease, smoothness and expansiveness that was sorely lacking when I first put them on.
Please excuse me. The Muses have arrived and I haven't mixed the ambrosia yet! I'll have to use the microwave version--I hope they don't notice the difference!

Very nicely put
I agree on all counts. Definitely not a myth.
From very tangible instances, I assure you burn-in works magic into your cans (dynamic open/closed HP's). They don't affect IEM at all, IMHO.
The first thing is they become gradually less distortion-sensitive. Bass becomes brawny; treble crystal clear and depth of sound field, AKA soundstage, becomes broader and more ample. After 50 hours of burn-in, my newely acquired US Ed 9 has low frequency that is TO DIE FOR.
When I first got my RS-1, the sound was harsh and hard, piercing my ear canals to the unbearable. I let them run overnight with pink noise and volume dial on my DV332 to 1-2 o'clock, not recommended, as I guess the drivers were at risk of being damaged from the volume level.
The day after they had settled down very much. I didn't hear the piercing that was going on earlier, and they sounded softer, more relaxed.
This can not possible be placebo, as I noticed it immediatly, going WOW! as soon as I put them on.
So yes, I am a believer of headphone burn-in. Cables and such, more sceptical.

i believe in break-in, which is what i think we're talking about here (the physical loosening of a driver. like breaking in shoes). not so sure i believe in burn-in (this magical equilibrium that cables and such meet).
