I have this problem as well. Its one of the reasons i'm looking forward to my Edition 9

It's not really a bad headband in the sense that it's durable. I think they could have found something classier for the Ed9, but it's not a big deal. If the "PRO" lettering is really bothersome, couldn't you just replace it with one of the HFI series headbands that just have "Ultrasone" on top?

My conjecture is that for the Pro900s they incorporated some damping modification to their original 750 design similar to the ones I published. Doing so has improved the sound so significantly, they've been able to create a new model out of it. I further speculate that the ear cups are identical in size (same mold design used, just a different color plastic injected) but the internal volume (acoustic impedance / driver loading) is slightly smaller due to the added damping.

They may have also modified the baffle design to open it up a tad. (more like the ED9)

Cheers and happy listening!

*shrug*
The basic difference of the cups between the PROLine and the Edition is not only the shape, the size is completely different as well. The PROLines are considerably bigger (almost the double in volume or more), the Edition has a flat plate in which the pad is attached, and the "actual cup" is a little bigger than the size of the driver and on top it is padded inside, the driver is placed angled, the area exposed of the diaphragm is a lot bigger than the PROLines as well...

The PROLines volume is the size that you basically see round, there is no padding inside, and the driver is placed completely flat inside the cup, the rest is an empty volume, the 900 seems to me to be very similar to the PROLines in size and shape, specially the 750 which is also closed...

Default A Question for Ultrapaul

Ultrapaul:
This, as you know, was the response Analogbox received when he asked Ultrasone PR if Pro 750, Ed 9 and 900 share the same titanium coated drivers:

"Yes, the PRO 900 has the same 40mm titanium driver. The frequency range of the PRO 900 is greater: 6 - 42,000Hz. The ear cups of the PRO 900 are smaller but have a larger sound stage, similar to that of the Edition 9. Some of the other points of differentiation are the Nuetrik connectors, soft USC-cable and a carrying case."

My question of you, is any part of this statement (from Ultrasone PR) incorrect?

At this point in the game that is the key question...at least until some key players at head-fi get a hold of the headphone to have a listen.

Because of the release date, and manufacturing time schedules and of course, everyone wanting to review it, (and me only having officially 1 here, with 1 in reserve), it was difficult to be able to get 1 to our PR company. Therefore, a correction is in order for his statement:

The ear cups of the PRO 900 are the same size as the rest of the PRO Series of headphones.

Hope that clears that up. And yes, Jude has one of them.

Thank you for that, Paul (it is Paul, right??)
So the cups and the drivers are the same then, if I get this all right after so much speculating?
So it's more the interior design of the cup that provides the different frequency and "hopefully" different sound. I guess we'll see shortly.
I am really looking forward to this headphone though. If it is a step up from the 750s as in a more pronounced, less hollow midsection I'll be all over it.

So, does that mean he didn't have a unit on hand at the time of his response? Then how was he able to assess the size of the cups, drivers, and different soundstage? There must have been some sort of information that was given to him from Ultrasone so that he could do his part, right?

Anyway, the question still remains. What we really want to know is whether the drivers are the same or not. Because, even though the size of the cups are important, the type of drivers are the most important factor in the headphones and it's something that should be advertised without false.

Default Questions for Analogbox and Ultrapaul

Analogbox:
Who did you speak with at Ultrasone for the information you received?

Ultrapaul:
I understand the cup size of the Pro 900 is the same as the rest of the Pro series. Is there any difference in the Pro 900 drivers compared to the Pro 750 drivers?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I sent a PM to Ultrapaul regarding the person I've contacted with. It looks like he'd contacted the PR person and posted the "correction" after.
