This thread will probably benefit from being left alone, so as to reverse burn-in ...

OK then why don't you arrange to meet with John Grado and do some serious discussion and testing then? Are you saying Grado is lying in what he discloses in his Librettos and interviews with hi-end mags?

I wouldn't quite describe that dynamic as bottom feeders & high rollers... though I must admit I never thought that those expensive phones were subsidizing my cheap ones... finally a rational justification for a 1000% markup! Assuming of course that Grado loses money on $60 phones... which I seriously doubt.
Don't get me wrong. I respect the RA1 Reference Amp. Just because its $30 worth of parts, and uses a .50c opamp part at its heart, doesn't mean its bad. It means you can safely substitute 'cmoy' for 'grado ra-1' and 'altoids tin' for 'wooden case' in the following quotes lifted from the Grado site...

So, are you saying the RA-1 is a cmoy and SR60 is a GS1000? I suppose a Hyundai is a BMW too, right?

Ah, but they both use engines, and run on gas! It's a conspiracy.
I think this thread is bogus. What I've personally heard leads me to believe that the drivers are all different. Why? Because I've heard my HF-1, and I've heard heavily modified HF-1's that have been woodied, recabled, and all kinds of other mods. Does it still sound like a HF-1? Heck yes, almost exactly the same. If the kind of stuff we're talking about really mattered, why wouldn't that woodied HF-1 all of a sudden become a super-headphone?
I also recall a similar test I recently posted on where me and another Head-Fi'er compared my stock HF-1 versus his recabled/woodied SR-225. If the drivers were really all the same, the SR-225 should have had RS-1-like performance, yet, it did not, and still sounded exactly like an SR-225, and we agreed that the HF-1's sounded better despite his near-$300 investment on top of the cost of the 225's themselves. At the same time, I've also compared my HF-1's to the RS-1, and the RS-1 is clearly the superior headphone.
This is all completely bogus. The drivers are the key. I'm not trying to trounce Larry's great work, heck, I'll probably get my HF-1's woodied someday when I have the cash, but the fact is, it makes very little difference in the sound of the headphone, and if you really want to hear a difference, you have to hear a different headphone altogether that uses different drivers.

zanth, don't quote my posts adressed to Indeed, they're not any related to this thread, i'm just loving communicating with the man.
zanth, don't pretend to be mighty unmasker, you're looking funny at least and destroying all the credit you got with your insightful posting in other threads throughout the years. Try to understand i'm not getting at your uncle J. Grado and maybe your brain will stop boiling.
Just read the title again. If you don't understand something - ask.

It's a typical hatchet job to "ask a question" designed to make someone look bad. That people take offense shouldn't surprise you, indeed, it was obviously your goal.

My RS-2 and RS-1 (both with APS V3 cables and bowls) were very close to each other - the main difference being the RS-2 with a little more prominent mids that are a little more intimate - but the differences were not huge.
My HF-1 (also with APS V3 cable and bowls) were closer to the RS-1, but the HF-1 with flats were closer to the RS-2 which were also closer to the HP-1000 than the RS-1 were. I think they are are all very fine headphones, but when I had the RS-2 with stock cable they were a little bit duller than I like, and closer to my MS-1. Based on what I heard before and after the APS re-cable with the RS-2, I had my RS-1 and HF-1 re-cabled at the time I bought them from Alex at APS.

Zanth is spot on with his observations, and you are a troll.
I suggest a mod locks this thread.
