I'm sorry I guess I sound worrisome but I plan to buy the pk-1's and etymonic er-4p's from the FS forums, and I really don't want to spend my money on fake items or get scammed. You see I have a small wallet, but I still want to build up my portable rig. (it's my only rig)

The situation in China is so bad, it turned out that, a couple of years ago, just about all NEC product manufacture in China was fake! Even the factories themselves thought they were genuine, but weren't.

usually with shure phones its wise to look at the shure logo on the phones, look carefully at where the R joins the E. if theres a clear gap between them they are certainly fakes. the R must contact the E.
another tip is to look at the cable joints for the date code. this is another place fakes can slip up.
these are obvious ways to spot shure fakes but as of yet i have not came across fake e500/se530, could be the price, fake manufacturers usually copy cheaper phones such as cx300's because they are easier to mimic and sell plenty more due to price

Ok here are the pics... anyway, the cable date is 0788 SE530

I wouldn't worry about fake Ety's...the market is so small for most of the "boutique" headphones anyway, it's not really worth it to counterfeit most high-end phones. As others have stated, the quick buck is made in the lower to mid range phones. Also, as stated, if in doubt buy from authorized dealers. Really good deals can be had, you just need to hunt for them. For instance, I ordered some Senn HD650's from an Amazon dealer for $307 plus shipping. They were defective, but I couldn't RMA them to Senn for service, as the dealer was not an authorized one. They also mysteriously had no serial number on them. They were not fakes, but I suspect they were refurbs or "fell off a truck" somewhere. After some wrangling, I got my money back, and bought them from J&R for $329 with free shipping. In the end, I paid $10 more for peice of mind and a full two year factory warranty. If you go to the J&R site, they are listed at a much higher retail price, but there's a link for "email me the price"...oftentimes dealers are not able to display their lowest price by the manufacturer, but if you "add to cart" or have them emaild to you, you'll find bargains. Shop wisely - usually the "too good to be true" deal is just that...
