Angry Stupid and Costly Mistake :(

My Stupid Mistake.

I finally finished re-wiring my SA5000’s with Siltech G5 Silver/Gold wire. I am however fairly certain that I damaged one driver.

I had the job done except for the plugs. I waited a couple of weeks for a gold plated ¼” plug to arrive. Finally when I went to install the plugs I was unsure as to which wires lead to which earpiece. Now there’s a cool little trick to determine what wires go to what speakers in a home theater setup. You take a battery (AAA,AA,C,D, or 9V) and touch it to the speaker leads. This causes a small POP to be emitted. I was tired and obviously was not thinking clearly. When this is done to a speaker the crossover routes all of the DC to the woofer. Any speakers woofer has by comparison to a headphone driver unlimited power handling. I did this to my SA5000’s with a 9V. I may have gotten away with it if I had used a AAA, but I used a 9V. STUPID! STUPID! STUPID

One driver is now distorting on occasional passages. I am very excited by the overall performance gains produced by changing to Siltech G5 wires, but I have to replace the bad driver. I am also considering replacing both drivers at the same time to maintain driver-to-driver coherency.

So my stupidity is likely to cost me between $150 and $200 and another 3-4 weeks without my vastly improved MDR SA5000’s.

Once done I will write up the changes. I will also bring them to the National meet. I am not advocating such modifications for others. The cost would be prohibitive. Who wires $400 headphones with $850 worth of wire?

I do.

I'm sorry man. I've done some stupid things before that have cost me. I wish your lesson didn't have to come on a $400 pair of phones though.

I feel your pain. A couple of weeks ago I used the wrong car charger on a $340 dap. It literally had smoke coming out of it.

I wired something up wrong and nearly killed myself. Got a nice scar. I'm an Electrician too.

Ouch, sorry to hear that. Guess it could have been worse - at least they didn't catch fire!

Since this distortion only comes up some times could it be some vibration inside the headphone. Maybe cable on driver or housing, or driver on housing or ???

This weekend I will open up the offending side and check wire routing and reseat the driver. Hopefully the issue will be resolved*. Otherwise I will order two new drivers on Monday.

* I doubt that it will be. I know the sound of a driver that has been damaged by being whacked hard against its stops.

oooh, ouch, my condolences - happens to the best of us.

since that driver is down for the count anyway, though, why not have fun finishing it off?

Interesting. I haven’t heard the distortion for at least 4 or 5 discs. I must go back to the discs where I heard the distortion (Medeski, Martin, & Wood) and see if it is still there.

As it stands now I am damn happy with the sound . I have been planning to get a set of AKG K701’s that I thought bettered the stock SA5000’s (especially in HF purity). Now I’m not so sure.

It would be great if the distortion magically disappeared. It would at least save me a couple of hundred dollars.

Yikes, you are a crazy crazy man. 9V DC to headphone driver: Not Recommended.

Of course to be fair to the K701, you should rewire that one with G5 as well.

Easier said than done. Unlike the SA5000's the K701's wires go into one side only. We don't have 28 gauge G5. Our wire is too thick to run both channels into one side. It would end up straining my neck

Sure would sound nice though.

Has the distortion resurfaced?

So when are you going to wire KSC-35's with Siltech wire?

Ouf, I did the guy flinch as soon as I saw 9v on the list. Somehow I knew which one Yikes would pick out of the pile

For potential diy types, just put the cans on and use a resistance meter to check sides. You will hear a click on whichever side you are testing. You will get the side to side resistance at the same time, a bonus!

Yikes, I am working up a new headphone test mic. I can test L vs R if you want a comparison. I hope they start behaving. The fact that the driver is still working is a very good sign.
