Studio headphone recommendation
I want to get my son a pair of headphones to use in his home studio. The music is swing/hip-hop - though that shouldn't matter as I want to find a pair of neutral and accurate headphones for him. He is keen on this too as the headphones will be used in mixing. Budget is up to £200.
Grateful for some advice. Thanks.

Amazon.com: Sony MDR-V6 Monitor Series Headphones with CCAW Voice Coil: Electronics
It's an absolute classic, used by musicians everywhere. The sound is accurate, and can't be beat for the price. If you want, search for it on the forums. The only bad things you hear about them are their dry, analytical sound, which is not a problem if you are using them for a studio.

You should get Sony MDR-7506s, they are ubiquitously standard, still in production, and have serviceable parts. So say the cable has a short, then you can order a new cable. I think for studio work standardization is key. I bought mine for field recording for just that reason. There are also DT100s (sort of old school), and the older K240. The new AKG K240 is a different animal, and meant for Hi-Fi not recording.

Accurate as in no artificial bass boost, or bass emphasis? If so, the DT48/DT100 & maybe the CD900ST..

If they ae for mixing and not for tracking you will need good neutral open headphones.
You need headphones that are accurate and neutral.
Personally I would post such a question on Gearslutz or Sound On Sound which are both frequented by very respected recording engineers.

Thanks for the further suggestions. Yes, I am looking for neutral, uncolored headphones - no bass boost. Mixing on headphones is far from ideal but neither is trying to do it using nearfield monitors in a small bedroom. I'll think over the advice here and post in the forums John suggested.

1. M-50 @ $99 on ebay free shipping.
2. GMP 8.35 D Monitor, great studio hps, hard to find in the US.
3. Ultrasone Pro-550/650, not so studio but very impressive sound, good bass and sound stage.
For K240MKll or the K702, you will need an amp or a good sound card.

You can mix on nearfields in a small room (I've worked in some pretty small edit suites), but do you want him doing that is the question? It's also not all about the Hi-Fi, you also need the low-Fi to see what a mix will sound like on a radio, computer, home stereo, ect... You can also check out the Sennheiser HD280pro, they seem to be pretty popular with editors, but the 7506s are much more comfortable when on your head for hours, and that is important for studio work.
