Started down the long and costly road...
I bought my first pair of headphones last week, from a friend and fellow head-fier. Grado sr225 and so far, even unamped I am absolutely amazed by the sound, I've been listening to Clapton - Unplugged on an iPod and it is pretty incredible. But already I'm getting the urge and starting to wonder about an amp...bye bye wallet. Send your condolences.

Lol, this is an addictive hobby. Unlike sports and other hobbies all the effort thats required here is pressing a play button.
I can't imagine ever being completely satisfied. SR225s are great, but theres an RS-1 then theres a PS-1! Of course you'll want to try out the inherent house sounds of different manufacturers.

Listening to 225's without a really expensive amp has been proven by the Surgeon General to be hazardous to your health. Get with the program, man... it's your life at stake.

Yeah welcome to the club. I bought some SR-80's and was so astounded by the sound I bought my father some SR-325i's for Christmas this year (he's always been good to me).
I took a quick listen and they were even better! Long story short: I bought RS-1's.

My theory is that if you upgrade in big leaps, but spaced far apart, you will always see large improvements, but it won't have as big an impact on your wallet. I, of course, and going to have to test this theory out.

chri5peed: worst thing is multiple hobbies. It's hard enough trying to pick between a speaker rig and a new amp, but throw in the alternate choice of a new graphics card or a $200 tennis racket and things get really ugly around my wallet sometimes.

When it comes to high end audio, headphones are the less expensive way to go, believe me.
Sure you can splurge on a really high end CD player / DAC, because this is the one component that is in common with speaker based systems, but headphones and amps are so much less expensive than their equivalents on the speaker totem pole.
I for one feel extremely pleased about the value proposition of head-fi, although I agree its easy to get carried away.

Congratulations, anom, on the SR225's. They sound AMAZING unamped from modest sources. You can take an INexpensive next step in sound quality from your phones. Quite a few folks have noticed the sonic differences in Grados by changing the foam pads. With your SR225's came the bowl (donut) shaped pads, which are generally noticed to enhance the highs, diminish the lows, and increase the size of the soundstage. Another pad which is highly regarded by a pretty good number of Grado owners is the modified Sennheiser 414 pad. These enhance the bass, give the highs less emphasis and give a smaller soundstage, but enhance the intimacy and clarity of the sound very nicely. A set of HD414 pads can be purchased from Sennheiser for about $8 US (shipped). The modification is to cut a round hole in the center of the pad so as to expose the entire driver area. It's a pretty cheap experiment, and, for such a modest amount, CAN provide a substantial improvement in the sound of your SR225's. I emphasize CAN because quite a few Grado owners prefer the bowls to the modified Senns. I mention the modified Senn pads because I am one of the Grado owners who greatly prefers the sound of my SR225's with the modified Senn pads. I wonder on which side of the bowls/modded Senns choice YOUR ears will fall?
Just in case you are interested in a set of Sennheiser HD414 pads, they can be found here:

The SR225 is crap. You need at least something along the lines of an Orpheus to even begin approaching mid-fi.
