Sony MDR V6 Vs. Koss Portapro (disappointed!)
...so I've been using the Koss Portapro's for about 2 months now and I have been very impressed with the clarity and definition of these/however I was looking for something for a noisy subway commute. After much research about decent sounding, affordable headphones that could adequately drive my Sansa Clip, I opted for the Sony MDR-V6's after reading many positive things. I have to say that after day 1 of listening to a head-head test, there really is a vast difference in sound quality between the Pro's and the V6's. The audio from the V6's is way less defined and is definitely boxed compared to the great dimension, clarity and definition of the Portapro's. The highs and lows of the Koss' are far superior (to my ears), than the V6's. I'm quite disappointed with the V6's and can't imagine much improvement overtime. 
Does anyone have any other recommendations for a closed pair of headphones that can reproduce the detail and richness of the Portapro's? and be driven by an MP3 player without amplification?

You could try the Audio Technica M50, but PortaPro's are pretty much as good as you can get for that price range.

Sure. What's your price range? I'm pretty sure my modified Creative Aurvana Live! would do it for you.

Boxed in is how most closed phones sound in that range. I bet the v6 isolates much better than the portapro does.
And when I say "I bet" I mean I know.

X2. You are not going to get a lot of good portable cans option at <$100. The D1001 barely isolates, while the ES7 isn't exceptional good in isolation. They are probably not enough for subway listening. IMHO the K81 would be a much better choice than the V6, but there's quite a few good IEMs like the UM1, ER6i, IM716, Superfi 3 etc that you can consider (and even more like the PFE and Superfi 5 that you can get if you stretch your budget a bit). I think you are better off considering those.

I missed the subway / isolation issue earlier. You'll be better off with IEMs. I suggest also reading and posting in the portable headphones forum.

thanks for the input folks...i dislike iem's, earbuds, etc, because those things never fit into my ears..i know there are some excellent sounding iem's, but proper fit becomes a major concern. I'll post a new message in the portable section - thanks. How are the Senheisser 280's?

I didn't enjoy the HD280s because they are headclamps (primary reason why they're good with noise isolation) and are really uncomfortable. I wasn't too impressed with the SQ either.

Equation RP-21 with a sansa clip is not bad. With a short enough mini to mini, you can just stick it to the left ear cup. Fiio E5 comes with such a cable.

Look into the Audio-Technica ATH-M50. I've consistently heard good things about them on this forum and elsewhere, and is one that I am seriously considering purchasing to complement my SR60.
Currently, you can find it on Amazon for $99.99 (only 5 left in stock).
