Default Someone Make Me a FAQ (Please?)

Hello everyone,
I am still very new to Head-Fi and can-lovin in general. Though I'm very good at self-educating in a pretty short period of time, I wanted to ask a number of questions related to headphones. In the end, I'm hoping that this post might end up as a stickied FAQ for noobs - quite like myself right now.

Question: Beginning to End - Components in the Chain:
After doing some reading in the various forums, I'm a little confused on the number of components that can get involved. To make things simpler, I will talk about my current situation since it is so basic.

Right now I'm sitting at the computer. Here is what I have involved in my listening experience in order from beginning (music) to end (my ears):
  • Music: Pandora.com (normally high bit-rate MP3s or CDs)
  • Sound Card: Audigy 4 (considering an E-MU 0404 USB after doing some reading)
  • Headphones: Sennheiser HD-595

From the reading I've been doing here is what I think can be involved in the beginning to end process and what purpose I think they serve:
  • Music: What I want to hear, as perfect as possible, in the end.
  • DAC: Moves bit-perfect (hopefully) sound to the amp or headphones.
  • Amp: Powers the headphones with some real, clean juice, sometimes adds a little flavor of its own.
  • Headphones: Feeds my brain with noise, lovely noise.

Now my questions:
  • Is this everything that is involved in the process? What other components can get involved?
  • What purpose do they serve?
Please feel free to go crazy and nail down every possible part that can get involved.

I think, for now, I will keep it simple and go with this as the first part. I can always ask more questions later.

Thanks much,

Mr00000

Haha. Sounds like I've managed to confuse someone. Anyone else confused?

I think all the information has been covered over and over again. Just get friendly with the forums search function. A wealth of knowledge can be found.

I can't see too much missing in the latter of your lists.

The only point I would probably clarify is that you have music as one of your components. Typically this would be referred to as the source. Your source is the computer because it is the component that outputs the signal to the rest of your rig.

Just because the music might come from a streamed source online or over any other type of network is mostly irrelevant to your rig and would be analogous to CD if your source was a CD player. The CD is the media.

there's also a transport, whose job it is to bit perfectly or otherwise transport data to the DAC (source)

the transport can be a pc interface or a CD player. sometimes source/DAC and transport are combined together eg CD player or soundcard's analog outs.

but yeah, don't forget about power, interconnects and power cables, and other tweaks such as vibration isolation and dampening

I would definitely suggest doing some searching of past threads, there is a wealth on just about everything you mentioned. I'm just scratching the surface and I have been incredibly informed and challenged.
