I have noticed a related strangeness with drivers of many different cans -- sometimes, if I haven't used a can for a week or more, and I listen to music with them, the volume gets slightly louder over the course of maybe 5-10 minutes or so.
I know this happens, when the volume starts getting higher than my normal listening level, and I have to turn my stepped attenuators down by one click.
I've noticed this effect many times, with different cans.
Same thing on initial burn-in on new cans -- I set the volume at a certain normal-listening click setting, and when I check progress later on, the cans are quite a bit louder, almost every time I start burn-in on a new can.
So, drivers DO tend to "soften up" or "loosen up", or whatever.
And, sometimes "stiffen up" if unused for a while.
And I burn-in a LOT of new cans (Head-Fi can addict here).

I know with mine I have to turn the volume up to a quickly fatiguing level to hear the detail I want.
I'm with Skylab on his assessment of not really finding a place for these- I have better home cans and I wouldn't wear these as portables.
I guess I suffer from a bit of denial(or laziness) because I'm still trying to work with them instead of just getting rid of them.

I would say that these are actually great for somebody who can't spend a lot of money on more expensive closed headphones, and NEED closed headphones. These 780's are great for rock music, and it really brings out everything I found wrong with the D2000's (too laid back, too liquidy smooth, not enough bass punch). Mine have less than 30 hours of burn in only so far, but we'll see how it goes. They may actually be my pair of closed cans since I can't justify spending more than $200 on my headphones. I also have a pair of 580's for my laid back classical and jazz music, and SR60's for rock music when I don't need closed headphones. I think I found my trio of analytical, fun, and closed.

The D2000 is the "polite" girl, and the HFI-780 is the nice, interesting, "sassy" one...never boring to be around....  
And, apparently, with the right "clothes" (ALO cable?) she is a "knockout"!

Agreed, except it should be a quartet, not a trio - the D2000 make a good closed compliment to the sound of the open HD600, just like the 780 make a good closed compliment to the open SR-60 (sub any grado here).
The ALO re-cabled 780 however could serve as an only closed can, as it smokes my recabled D2000.

I for one am not the type for laid back sound, other than the HD580! FWIW, the D2000 sound more boring than the HD580 to me personally.

What, Now them aren't very good as home headphones, because they doesn't cost hundreds of dollars...??. I don't understand this rich people......
Ha, this headphone must be much better that the Darth Beyers and the DX1000. These headphones are overratted and yes, the only that you care the most is deep bass and is for that that you don't like the HFI-780 a lot.
Offtopic: In that the Darth beyers are better than the DT990? because of the Deep bass quantity and slightly veiled treble?

I think Skylab is validated in his own opinion. BTW, hasn't he been trying to help you out lately, so what's with the subtle insults? People have different financial circumstances, and can afford what they can afford.

Since the ALO Hfi750 is $450 and one can get a Darth Beyer for about the same price...how would these sonically compare?
HPaddict, I see that you had a pair of DB's V3's in the past. Although probably from deep memory, can you comment on any sound differences between the DB's and the ALO780's?

Not too personal, but i dislike the "Flavor of The Month" people; fickle person,
People that buy something and in the little time, already don't like it; and people that buy something simply to buy (and having the same and Super expensive item) by ala slwizer, I detest/dislike (nor hate (i don't hate to nobody)) extravagant/spendthrift people.
To these that had a lot of money and don't known what to do with this money, why do you not donate that Damm money to the Red Cross??. And you make something good for others. Not only in the audio... and you conscience/karma will be more clear
