This is exactly how I feel about my Edition 9 compared to the D2000. I know that the D2000 is recommended for rock but they really come out as soft when compared with Edition 9. I've listened to some AC/DC recently and there is no question which can I prefer.
I definitely agree with this. The D2000's are too polite!
I wasn't going to say anything about this till I got them, but I have the FIRST PAIR of OFFICIAL ALO RE-CABLED HFI780 WITH DIODE REMOVED, which already shipped to me on the 20th. ALO is AHEAD OF THE CURVE on this one guys.
They should be here today or Monday and they reportedly sound fantastic with only 36 hours on them to make sure they could handle a lot of power. This basically voids the warrantee on the drivers of course, as the board likely protects them from too much power. But they seem pretty hardy without the diode board.
ALO should be announcing these this weekend, and if I understand correctly, you buy the HFI780 from them already modded - not send yours in. It would be logical to assume that, because they have no idea how abused your old ones might be, and if they die would not want to be blamed either way. I'm awaiting the offical word from Ken this weekend, so check out the ALO vendor forums for news.
Cheers!

I'm wondering if others would agree that the HFI-780's are good for for rock like Foo Fighters, Muse, some punk, prog rock, metal, and math rock (modern rock in general). Personally I really enjoy the Grado sound signature, so the sibilance of these sound like it won't be much of a problem at all. Again, I'm just finding that my D2000's are too polite in the bass impact, and the midrange at times seems sucked out. I guess...would HFI-780's be comparable to the closed version of Grado's?

Let me start out by saying I've been a lurker and I'm a headphone noob.
I got my pair of 780s a few days ago and they've been burning in ever since (only 40ish hours on them so far). They're my first pair of "real" headphones so I can't compare them to anything. I do have a pair of Shure 530s, but I won't even embarass myself trying to compare them. That said, I do love these things. Plenty of bass, nice midrange. I like them. I just threw in some Foo Fighters and Muse and they sound great to me on these cans (take that for what it's worth while noting my first sentence). I really like these with trance and electronica...Crystal Method sounds very nice.
As I sad, I'm a noob and have no basis for comparison to other cans, but I like them a lot. I had noticed some changes over the first couple hours , but not much since then. My ears either suck, I'm immune to psychoacoustics or again, I'm a noob.
