I owned the D2000 and ES7 several months ago and sonic memory fades quickly. Also, my HFI-780s are still burning in with pink noise. I did listen to them a bit but I'm trying hard to not do any critical listening until they hit the 200 hour mark. So I wont have definitive impressions until them.
I prefer the sound of the 780 over the D2000. The D2000 sounded closed whereas the 780 sounds very airy and open for a closed can. Also I prefer the bass definition on the 780. There is also a better sense of separation of instruments & voices than the D2000s if I recall correctly. Also the cord on the D2000 was unwieldy. I sold them off promptly.
The 780 are in a completely different league than the ES7s. No comparison IMO.
I still cant believe the 780s are only $200 ! They are that good for the money.
hope this helps a bit.

I compared my Denon 2000 with the HFI 780 last night briefly. Still burning in the HFI 780 on third day today...
but the Mids are more forward on the Ultrasones and also more resonant bass. I am preferring the Ultrasones for the moment. Still the Denon's sound quite smooth compared to the Ultrasones. I like them both but if I had to take just one as of now I would take HFI 780...but why take just one! hehehe
Hearing some prog rock (Spocks Beard), the Ultrasones are totally killer and some Joe Jackson - Night and Day, the piano sounds so good.
Out of curiosity, have you heard the HFI-780 to think its just a FOTM ?
No, I haven't, neither I said that they are bad or FOTM. Just warning to be cautious of the "new toy syndrome". "There is something about Ultrasone" Prolines madness is still fresh in my memory, and there was more than one person opinion. And look now, prime Ultrasonians who were praising Prolines as the best thing after sliced bread, now after getting HFI-780, finally admit that Prolines are overly bright, metallic, have recessed mids, etc. .... all things that they just refused to hear from others before.
The time, more reviews, meets impressions will tell whether HFI-680/780 are really as good as some people make them to be. There are already some reports on sibilance for instance. It just takes time to get over initial excitement and start hearing faults.

The sibilance I have heard is nothing compared to DT990 for example. It is there but like hardly. At least for me as of now. I have only heard sibilance maybe 3 or 4 times. With good quality music its not there at all. Of course this is only day 3 and it will likely change, but hopefully sibilance will disappear completely later.

I agree. It's nice to have some affirmation of my last post about the D2000 and 780. You have good ears.

The last few posts from HeadphoneAddict made me really interested on these headphones though I'm still waiting for more impressions.
A $200 closed headphone that sounds closer to an open one sounds too good to be true. My previous experience with some closed headphones (RP21, HFI550 HFI700DVD-now owned by HeadphoneAddict ) was not very good. I like the A900 though, if this is better than that I'm in.
The HFI700DVD are at the bottom of my Ultrasone food chain right now. I liked them as much as my HD25. I haven't listened to them in like two months and now the 780 walk all over them.
If they weren't signed by Florian Koenig at Ultrasone I'm not sure I would have still them once I got the 780's

x2. there isn't any sibilance on the prolines, unless it's a terrible recording with sibilance. the dt990s however, are treble monsters, they add sibilance to everything ruthlessly. there aren't many recordings out there that sound natural and tolerable with the dt990s without eq'ing.
i also haven't heard any midrange suckout on the prolines that someone mentioned. and yea i noticed the metallic tone before burn-in but now after 250 hours it's gone totally. i've compared it to all of my other headphones to be sure.
