Small update: My 780's now have well over 200 hours burn in. However, the 780's may have just a little too much treble sizzle, I fear. There is a little extra sibilance on some vocals that I know shouldn't really be there. This will require some careful system matching, I think.

More treble sizzle than DT990?

My 600 ohm DT990's do not have treble sizzle. It's the main difference between the 600 and 250 ohm versions. So the 600 ohm DT990's treble is smoother than the HF780, yes.

This is very interesting. I have the same gold-plated Ultrasone driver in my HFI-650, PROline 650, HFI-2200, and more recently HFI-680, none of which demonstrate anything approaching what I'd consider to be a treble "sizzle".
Is this something you noticed from the beginning, or just recently following the 200-hour mark?
I wonder whether the frequency enhancements that Ultrasone make to the 780 (which, to my understanding is essentially a tweaked 680) ultimately contribute to this. Guess I'll know soon enough when my pair arrives.
There is no doubt some extra energy in the 6-8kHz range. It isn't a problem on many recordings, and it's generally not enough to be really considered a "problem", more a "characteristic". Someone used to the more laid back treble of a Sennheiser may not like it. But it's nowhere near as aggressive as Grado treble

OK I listened to "Wind That Shakes The Barley" by Dead Can Dance just now to test soundstage. The 780's have a very wide soundstage, and excellent image specificity. However, they have a very shallow soundstage - MUCH shallower than the DT990's. People who really crave soundstage depth would be advised to go with something else.

Please don't let it be! I've been dead set on getting these for a week and now this comes out. Does it have the potential to be painfully bright because I've had enough of that and hearing damage because of it(well i believe partially) from my MS-1 and KSC-75.
I absolutely would NOT call it painfully bright, at all. At least not to me. And I switched over to the SinglePower Extreme, and this seems to have largely ameliorated the issue, although there is still a tiny bit of excess energy in this range still.
Oh the mids are wonderful, though. So open, clear, and transparent! Just a little forward, but very beautiful still.
If I had to choose one word to describe the 780's sound, I would choose "exciting".
Ah, is a pity to hear that (well a little bit (not bad at all for a closed headphone)). I hope that the soundstage depth to increase with more burn in (if it can).
Then Skylab, of your headphones, which have the deepest soundstage?
And i repeat again. Is the mids in the HFi-780 more forward or slightly recessed than your Denon D5000??
And which of the two (your DX1000 and DT990) has a bigger headstage?
Thanks.
P.S: the soundstage depth in this headphone is deeper than your Darth beyers (because i believe that it is the same as my DT770pro....) or not?
