That would definitely be an interesting comparism especially with the 750!

I posted it somehwere else but will just repeat it here; Does anyone know if the headband improval-thingy also includes the new PROlines??
Asking because I just found out my 750 has several tiny cracks in the headband and one small piece actually fell out today

Not sure but you could email NSL since they usually offer very good prices for Ultrasone. On their site they advertise listprice but when mailed they offer a different one...
They only ship con-usa though if I'm not mistaken.

I love my K-501s but I would like a closed 'phone for some isolation and maybe a bit more depth or impact.

Torzwo,

Try RMC audio. I got my pair from there by mentioning that I'm head-fier. Good Luck!

Thank you all very much. I will probably wait for a few more impressions and then go with RMC or NSL.

Will anyone also be taking delivery of an HFI-680 to compare? I've been reading more about the 680 and since I'm not into overwhelming bass I wonder if it would be more to my liking. I auditioned around 5 Ultrasones 2 years ago and remember only really liking 1 because compared to the others it had very tight and controlled bass but I never could remember the model nor find it again anywhere.

My HFI780 have fake leather pads, not velour.

Edition 9 pads are better still, not sure about the velour on my PL2500...

I'm not sure what you mean by overwhelming bass but I'm kind of sure that most Ultrasonistas are not into overwhelming bass, regardless of which model(or models) they have.

I don't think you need to worry about overwhelming bass, it would surprise me if eg. slwiser or skylab expressed a liking for a headphone with "overwhelming" bass.

But if you're after a headphone with a bass that's more comparable to a small standmount I think you should look at another brand, even the 450 has a healthy bass that reminds me of a fullrange speaker.

You've go it right. Just disregard my disjointed nonsensical post. The one I liked did sound like a full-range speaker.

I don't think the Ultrasone have too much bass.

My Edition 9 AND my HFI780 do have a bass presence that seems visceral at times, meaning somehow I feel the bass in my gut on electronic new age music that goes really low. I use to laugh at people that said that about a headphone till I felt it for myself. It's like some psych-trip when feeling that queezy in-your-gut disorientation from 16Hz bass that doesn't roll off. Like some kind of primitive reflex to low frequency tones that never evolved out of us. Listening to John Serrie and Liquid Mind space music was never this much fun before.

I switched to my APS v2 re-cabled Denon D2000 and they don't do that with the really deep notes, and yet they have the same normal bass impact as the HFI780. (even the Darth Beyer, which had tons of impact at 64-125Hz, didn't have the gut wrenching lows.)

Just got 'em. Unboxing photos and early impressions may be found HERE.

HFI-780s scheduled to arrive for comparison in a couple of days.

I've now cooked mine for more than 200 hours. They sound terrific. I will do a more full review later, but these are easily worth the money. They are more forward in the mids than any of my Beyer headphones, but they have an excellent bass foundation, and so the midrange forwardness doesn't make them painful; in fact, it's a nice change-up. Treble is detailed and extended, and very present, but not edgy or fatiguing. Pretty impressive sound for the $200 I paid. They are a very easy recommendation for anyone wanting a good sounding closed can that isolates well. Of the headphones I own, they sound most like the Denon D5000, but they isolate much better. The Denons are much more comfortable, but after "Stretching" the 780's as recommended above for 100 hours, they are comfortable enough.

Nice job here by Ultrasone!

Sky, I have two questions about the HFI780. How would you rate the sound compared to Shure E500? I know it's like comparing apple to oranges, but it's the only IEM we both have had. Would you say the improvement is extremely high? I'm thinking about the HFI for my portable rig.
Second question: can you advice for a portable amp? Does the Pico match the 780 well?

Thanks.

Looking for serious comparos between the HFI-780 & the Proline 750's.
