Point well taken. I don't know how the D2000s would stack up relative to the 5000s with the same measurement. My opinion on the D2000 were obviously not based on any scientific measurements at all. Just pure listening. Also I had them months ago so was talking from whatever memory I have left of them. Sonic memory has a short lifespan. To ME, the 780's bass is much more enjoyable than the D2000s. I really wish I had the D2000s now so I can A-B them. Ah well.
Did you see my comparison of APS V3 (silver copper) re-cabled D2000 vs ALO modded HFI780 in the other thread a few days ago?

I'd say the D2000 is a little slower, especially on the initial attack of piano notes, and tends to smooth over some of the sound and blend it together a little. This makes for a more relaxed can that puts you maybe in the 2nd or 3rd row, instead of on stage like the ALO-780's. They have a good solid bass, but not quite the attack and impact of the ALO-780. That makes them remind me of a closed version of the HD600 when the HD600 has the improved HD650 cable. I said "reminds me of" as in similar sound signature, but "not sounds just like". The HD600 with APS v3 cable or 18G Jenna Labs cryo cable is still better than the re-cabled D2000 at retrieving details and reproducing an accurate soundstage.
The ALO-780 has a quicker attack, and punchier bass, with crisp edges to the notes that bring out some extra detail and layering the way the HD600 with high-end cable does. The mids are a little more forward/up front and they put you up on stage, similar to a Grado but with a bigger soundstage that my RS-2 (my SR-60 and HF-1 have a bigger soundstage than RS-2). The highs on the ALO-780 have mellowed out to the same level as the re-cabled D2000 and re-cabled HD600, which is a welcome improvement over stock. When listening to the ALO-780 first, and then switching to the D2000, you can hear the D2000 sound a little more like a closed can, while the ALO-780 sound more like an open can to me.
That might be helpful. It is not saying the ALO-780 are good and D2000 are bad, but that depending on your tastes you may like the re-cabled D2000 more, or not. I like both, and had a chance to sell my D2000 this weekend, and parted with the HP-1000 instead

So Jamato, you still prefer the 750's to the 780's in SQ and comfort? Do your ears get hot in the 750's velour? If there's anything complain about for the 780's, it's that my ears get hot and the pleather sticks to my skin after a long listening session.
In Santa Rosa, Ca it is still cool but that is the one thing I Do Not like about pleather is that is gets hot and sticky. I don't have that problem with the 750's. The 750's are very comfortable and after having the 780's on for a while it like I have taken a vise off of my head when I go back to the 750's. The 780's just need to cook and then I will know. I hope for the best. . so now we will all stop and pray, oh lord of music bless these new headphones . . . ok, I have lost it. . later. .

Hm, I wonder if there are any velour pads for the HFI's.

Jamato, you are one hilarious guy. I hope you'll not crack before giving us your true expert opinion on how the 780s stack up against the 750s. So far, it is still 750 winning over the ever changing 780, right? In any case, it's going to take a lot to convince me to try the 780 over the 750.

So far I find the Proline 750's as more balanced and open. I am using a tube amp right now and the 780's still have that peaky high or slightly metallic. Time, or maybe some absorbing material inside of the housing of the drivers.
Jam, a little while ago Fitz came up w/ a mod for the PROline 2500 high frequency. It consisted of three components: cotton inside the earpiece, a piece of scotch tape over the small holes in front of the driver, and a piece of felt over the metal shild in front of the driver.
I experimented w/ the last two above and ended up placing a piece of felt in front of the PL 2500. Now they are mellower and do not exhibit a lot of treble energy.
Maybe something similar should be done w/ the HFI-780.

You must take into account that I think Jamato doesn't like forward headphones as much as say, I do. He also likes a bigger soundstage. So if you fall into that category, it seems like the 750's are the winner so far, but personally I don't want the 780's to be any more laidback and I actually enjoy the slightly metallic nature of the highs especially with rock music, and I have my 580's for soundstage music.
What it may get into is a slight coloration with the 780's but there is no way to know where they will end up yet. I see nothing wrong with different headphones on hand for a different listening experience. Like I have mentioned a few times before, it is like being at a different venue or hearing a Marshall amp vs a Fender, both tube of course. :^) While I think ultimately any amp or headphone or source should be neutral to the degree that any music should sound right with them it isn't always the case and like retubing a guitar amp to your liking, so it may be with different headphones.

How long does it take for the compression to loosen up? Currently have them stretched out with two small pillows. Wearing them feels like my head is going explode, and my head isn't even that big ... I think...
