Thanks, Skylab for the quick response. Makes me feel better.....I think. Judging by the fact that my wallet just tore out of the house, I have an inkling I might be the proud owner of two closed phones!!! I am going to wait for your "more later."
I really liked your pithy and simple comparisons. i think they will be very helpful to the community, writ large. I especially liked the tube/solid state differences.
Have a safe trip, but remember....we're waiting!

For all you long-time Ultrasone owners - I find the clamping force of the HFI-780 objectionable after 30 minutes or so. Will this lessen over time? The isolation is great, but they are nowhere close to comfortable when compared with something like the DT990. Comments?

yes it will, skylab. you can also speed along the process by having them rest/burn in on something that will keep them spread out. like a shoebox, or something.

There is a metal plate inside the headband, just try unbending it fully extended.

You pointed out the thing I mostly concern, when I have used to be with Beyer, D5000 already.

The clamping force is normal with time. The ear pads form to your head and the headband, in my experience, relaxes but it isn't hard to adjust by gently springing the headband.

Their break in is now being done with the earcups spread apart wider than the size of my head. Hopefully that will accelerate the process some.
It's amazing how Beyer has truly spoiled me comfort wise. Beyers are SO comfortable, they set a very high bar.

That was the first thing I noticed with my HFI-700 as well. In all the reviews I read about it, everyone said they were very comfortable. When I took off my DT990 and put them on, however, all I could think was, "What is this? It feels like I'm wearing something on my head!"

Skylab,
I'm curious as to which of your bevy of amps you end up preferring with the Ultrasones? But wait until the cans have sufficiently burned in (>200hrs) before deciding .

I will report for sure after burn in. So far they have only been used with the Meier Opera, which certainly seems to like them, at this early stage.

My first pair of relatively serious headphones was the IXOS Ministry of Sound DJ1003, which has the same headband as the Ultrasones and cups very similarly shaped to the HFI's, so though the grip is strong, it's actually just a return to familiarity for me.

Could anyone elaborate on the difference between the HFI 780 and the Pro 750? They seem to be pretty much the same, except the titanium/gold driver coating, and the detachable cable - only minor differences in impedance/sensitivity/freq-range... And the more expensive Pro model being way uglier as well.

Yes, sometimes (or not like that) the mids are strong, but i prefer them as them sound now.
Nonetheless, i could use EQ (soft or voice setting in the Winrip) if i will find the mids in the HFI-780 a little recessed (as in the DT770pro (well, i don't believe that so much))
I like the highs in my DT990 a lot, is very lifelike with a lot of sparkle, but only with a little bit of a sshh with some voices, but isn't bad at all.
But seen very good your ultrasone headphone. Umm i imagine how will be the HFI-780... (delicious sound). I hope that the sound in the HFI-780, will be refined as my DT990.
I am waiting impressions too from Skylab.

However, the sort of EQ curve I enjoy has slightly softer mids (meaning softer volume) and slightly louder ultra-lows. This is the sound I get from my HFI-700 after doing a little mod to it, but when it was stock, the mids were comparable to the DT990, but a little softer.
In highs, I prefer the DT990. I fact, if I could have a marriage of the DT990's highs, a mix of the HFI-700's and DT990's mids, and the HFI-700's lows, I think I would be in heaven. The HFI-700 has great highs - don't get me wrong. It's just that I prefer the the DT990 a little more there.
Overall, I would say the HFI-700 has a balanced sound across the spectrum, except in the low end, which is somewhat emphasized and very impactful.
Sorry for going off topic here. I've not forgotten that this is a thread about the HFI-780 and would still love to hear some impressions (especially from you, Skylab ).
