So what is your "drive" for buying expensive gear and headphoens?
I read an article about how people here are "weird" for spending thousands of dollars on audio equipment. What I want t oknow is... why do it?
I am not saying its a bad thing, I am starting to do it too and besides the hurt on my wallet, I love it
But I just want to know why? I do it because I love music and for the first time I am hearing it for what it really is. I don't have the best setup (I don't even really have a setup, I need an amp) but I already love it.
So yea.. thats it, any replies would be great. Thanks.

Audio Nirvana!
..or in short, gear that "disappear". Making it sound as you were right there, when the artist performed live.

Just like what toys are to boys.
While I subscribe to that belief, I also hold true the facts that this is all for the sake of enhancing the listening quality of our favourite tunes as well as getting a little closer to that paradox of perfect sound reproduction.
Cheers!

Good question, you could have started it as a poll hehehe
I have two main reasons:
- Knowledge. I'm quite sure that with recorded music you cannot have the same performance features you experience when listening to the real thing live. No matter you use speakers and how "good" they're, so forget about having it through phones. However using different phones and kits of gear I can perceive that some sonic features get me closer to the "real deal". Investigating their nature and shaping the right clues of sound, I learn how my perception works. Which leads me to the second reason.
- Achieving a decently believable facsimil of music -and please note I'm saying music not sound- that allows me to keep my attention on the important (for me) things into the music. They're more teleological reasons, things like intentions, meaning, purpose.. than immediate sonic features. Of course this requires you use "proper" music for such evaluation, not all music has those deep contents, and you have had to solve already some basic performance issues sound-wise.
At this point I'm still learning and you know, going to school is expensive :P

SHOW OFF!!
Why do you have two?
And i am driven because i want to hear music at a high quality. I wouldn't spend the extortionate amounts that others seem to spend, but that is only because of me being a student. I guess for most people its a hobby. People buy and modify cars, they learn instruments, so why not be an audiophile?

I enjoy listening to music and attending live performances and concerts. I also like playing with gadgets.
I also like the fact that with an existing recording, I can piece together gear to result in a presentation of my choosing.

Probably because he has one of them recabled and balanced.
I guess my answer is much simpler: "because it is there"

I feel the same as most of you that posted. For the first time I can hear something... and apreciate it. I mean what else in the world can you do or listen to or eat or anything and see how good it really is?
I have never heard a band live or listened to a rap concert or been to a concert or anything but after listening to music that sounds so good... you see how GREAT a thing is passing you buy EVERY DAY.
For the first time in my life I can BARELY comprehend the power in music and I hear it all the time.
Oh and while I'm typing a long post, let me thank the forum for being a great forum. This is the first one I have been to that I NEVER get stupid answers to the questions that I as that have been asked many times.
Everyone seems to be a nice person and eager to help out, shows there are still good people in the world.

No, no, one is mine, the other one is wrecked_porsche's. I'm just holding on to it for now.
It is scared of ending up in his hands and becoming overused.

Headphones, amp, and sources are just a medium for sound to pass through to get to me...
It's all about the music

Don't get me wrong krmathis. I am not that kinda person.
I'm someone who can't understand people who value form over function more! Don't EVER put me in the same category as those people!
What I was trying to say is, how can anyone NOT be stunned by the L3000's beauty? Like I said, beauty is the second thing that drives me. The music and enjoyment I get out of listening to music is the first and foremost reason.
I LOVE the Audio Technica house sound, so the stunning looks of the L3000 comes as a bonus!
I do not have the L3000 (yet) and I also lust after the O2s too, if that makes you feel any better.
 j/k

My "drive" is that I'm a bit of a musician myself, which is why I'm particularly fussy over sound quality.
And I'm out so much of the time, so good portable sound matters to me more than a good Home theater system.
