Default So I Heard PFR V1s Today...

My family went to Fry's to buy my sister a netbook. They ended up with an Aspire One for $250. That isn't important though, off to my story...

I wandered around looking for computer parts. And after I was done, I decided to listen to the Beats for some odd reason. The volume was way lower than Best Buy, so was able to tolerate them. Long story short, I hated them still. Then I went to the audio section (I wonder why the Beats weren't there. ) And lo and behold, there were PFR V1s on the listening booth! I've been wanting to hear them for God knows how long, so I did.

They are aurgasmic. The mids are just right, the bass is punchy while still being tight, the highs were pretty, the soundstage was incredible, and they were obviously very airy. And this is all underamped, most likely. They completely demolished my other headphones in every aspect, even in a loud environment. Then I looked at the price. They were good, but not $400 good. That's getting into Sigma range, which is my dream headphone.

All this is making me reconsider keeping DT48s. Michael, don't worry, I'll still buy them because I'm curious and I probably won't find another pair of A's for the price I did. But, I really want to trade them for an open headphone. I've realized that what I've been missing and wanting to hear is airiness. FWIR, DT48A's are clausterphobic. That's pretty much the opposite of what I want.
Anybody with Sigmas want to trade?

If you don't wan't the a's I'll just keep them and get those recabled instead, so I wouldn't have to lose out on two weeks without hearing them. Just save for the Sigmas. In all honesty, I doubt you'll like the DT48a.. Don't feel like you have to buy them from me cause you said you would. Lifes too short. No hard feeling.

Don't the PFR V1 have a bass tube that goes in your ears? And this was on display for EVERYONE to try? Yuck!

By the way, you can get them online for as low as $273.

Can you be remotely accurate in your posts? Maybe once a week? Just for fun?

Me?

When have I been grossly inaccurate? Other than the DT220s. I way way off on them after listening to them through a receiver.

Oh, kbi, I still want to try them out. There's still a chance I'd like them. If I don't, I'll recable them for free because of your trouble.

EDIT:
Hey, is it possible for CDBacklash to get these instead? He really wants a pair and is prepared to pay $600 for the A's.

Just FYI, I just bought a pair of the Sony PFR V1 from J & R in NYC for a decent price and in the short time I have had to evaluate them like them. I don't think they are for everyone, however.

They have a very spacious sound (for cans) but obviously are not for situations when disturbing others is an issue. They strike me as a bit bright but not too bad in this respect. The bass is kinda lean, but of decent quality with a lively sound. Not really neutral, but not terribly colored either. You have to buy into the spatial presentation to really love these phones, I suspect.

They strike me as poor-mans K-1000's without the AKG's tonal sophistication. But they will drive from an ipod/zune in a pinch (or use the supplied mini-amp) and are about 20% of the 1000's price, significant compensation!

I recently purchased a set used and they are quite remarkable headphones. They are very wide sounding which is very entertaining to listen to. They are a bit lean on bass and almost need a larger resonator in the ear canal. They can also be slightly uncomfortable at times.

A big 'eeewww' to the listening booth having these, unless they had a handy supply of alcohol wipes next to them.

EDIT: B&H just had these for $250, which I think is reasonable (they've since gone back up in price). $400-500 is too much IMO.

I was also surprised to see them being demo'd @ Fry's. IMO they have a really attractive look to it, and while I'm not going to comment on the sound (not sure what the bass tube thing is) because it's not really fair given the source/amp, I'm pretty sure if i have a boat load of cash I'd give these a try. Darn HF-2s
