Default Sennheiser PX100 vs. iGrados: Thoughts

Well, I bought both - a pair of iGrados for $35 plus $7 shipping, and PX100's for $19 plus 6$ shipping.

I have a weird-shaped head, and unusually large ears - The igrados did not fit my ears well at all. Mids are nice, but treble is shrill, and the bass kinda sucks - likely due to the ill-fitting pads. The "dime mod" helped, but not much - I'm going to need SR-80 pads or something similar if I'm actually going to use them. Furthermore, the headband (which is non-adjustable) pushes into my head right behind my ears - once again, most people won't have this problem.

The PX100's were a big step up - more bass, more everything. I'll be getting new pads, as they too have ear-seal problems, but they're a big step up. Good, reasonably flat sound from about 80hz (rough guess) through the treble range. There's a funny buzzing sometimes, though - I think that this could be fixed by reinforcing the plastic bits on the headphones. There also appear to be a few noticeable "peaks" - the grados seemed to have a more flat response.

Until further notice, I'd pick the PX-100's over the iGrados any day of the week. Some better-quality earpads may fix that - I recall the SR60's being excellent, and the iGrados look to have nearly identical drivers. They're also surprisingly well built - the PX-100's are, though well-made, a bit lacking in the flexible joints.

Also, I've noticed that the PX100's have a bit too much bass - a little EQ made for much better sound, and revealed an impressive midrange.

A futher note - the PX-100s will fit almost anyone, or at least the "standard" version will. People with ears less elephantine than mine may have better results.

I have both (although my PX100s are the older model). I really like the Igrado. When folks initially started posting, seems they couldn't wait to start modifying the poor things (change out the pads, quarter mod, etc). I used them off and on and thought they were pretty good, but not great. After awhile, though, I really started to like them (I believe the term is "burn-in"). Now I like them better than the PX100 or KSC-75.
