A good, hot, cuppa, of java is always most welcome, be it
french press, expresso, or mbriki. A good pot of Earl Grey,
will do just fine as well. Black with two sugar. Thanks ...
I had a set that I bought around when they came out about 10 years ago and sold again 3-4 years later after getting a set of HD25-1. I really can't remember their sound but obviously liked the HD25-1 better at that time since I sold them. The friend I sold them to has still got them and likes them enough not to have bothered to replace them.

I have an old pair of HD540 ref II...which has served me well over the past 10+ years... I remember them as being easy to listen to - but good for classical but not much else (the bass is poor and lacking in definition).
They have now been replaced with a pair of 650's....and yes - the difference is HUGE!!
Only thing I'll add is that they are very comfortable

Headphones: Sennheiser HD580, HD540 Reference II, PCX 250, Koss KSC75, Grado SR 60, ER4P
Amp: Eddie Current LunchBox, Go Vibe 5
Source: IPod Classic or Soundblaster Live! Platinum 5.1
540: bass-light, hardish to drive well
540 II: more bass, lower impedance, not too bad but still easily bettered by AKG or Beyer offerings from the same period.
