Sen 650 or AKG K701 with Benchmark Dac1?
Any opinions on which might pair better with the DAC1. I suspect the Sens are a better match but the AKGs seem interesting.

I vote k701!
Better bass, better detail, flatter response. But after proper burn in!

If DAC1 really is on bright and detailed side (as I've read) then I would imagine that HD650 would be better match with its somewhat dark and warm sound.
K701 has better details indeed but definitely not better bass than HD650. With K701 I would be scared about what happens to the already sibilant highs after adding DAC1.

Yes, if better = more
I think k701 has flatter bass response and more realism in the bass region. Our personal preferences are another question. I like deep strong bass but I appreciate more k701's neutrality.

Or how about a compromise.
The HD600 doesn't have quite the same bass as the 650 and not the same type of treble as the K701.
In fact, it's very balanced imo. and the price is way better than both.

I believe that the K701’s are much better headphones than the HD650’s, that being said I feel that the HD650 match the DAC1 better. Dare I say that the HD650/DAC1 combination is synergistic, not my choice for equipment (I’ve owned both) but synergistic nonetheless.

I vastly perfer the HD650 to the K701, I am tired right now and am not going to post why. I have posted several times before, just search or look through my posts. That being said, I vastly perfer the K1000 over either of them.

I think the DAC think tends to be a more analytical sounding amp, so the 650 would be a better match if you had to make me choose
For most other amps, I'd choose the K701!

This has been my experience exactly with my Fisher tube amps. Earjam has a DAC1 that I hope he brings to our mini-meet next week in KS, so we can give you our impressions. The 650's and K701's are both going on the trading block after the meet.

We had a Benchmark and the K701's at the KS meet yesterday. FWIW, I liked the K701's out of the DAC1 better than I had expected. It seemed to liven up the otherwise reserved mids, IMHO.

I agree. The 701 especially has problems with low bass. Low bass sometimes distorts actually. On a Corda Aria it did anyway. Could it be an amp matching thing? Also now that I have a better amp (wish I could have tried the 701 on the GS-X) the 650 has great highs. Far better than what I heard from my former Aria/701 combo. Not a fair test, but still the 650 is transformed with a better amp. It's quite amazing actually.
Getting back to the original question, I would surmise the DAC1/701 combo could be too analytical for my taste. Depends on the rest of the chain, ymmv and all that too.
