@Dutchess of York. This is the thread for the "Best headphones on the market", so I suggest you check out some of those mentioned earlier in the thread.
Stax SR-007, Stax 4070, Sennheiser HE90, AKG K1000, Sony MDR-R10, and more.

Or try the search button if you don't look for the "best" phone on the market. As the HD650, K710, etc. have been discussed 1000+ times already.

By the way. Welcome to Head-Fi!

Default The bottom line recommendation on reference setup?

Need recommendations on high end cans, and maybe a matching amp.
I bought Grado60s for my ipod while I went to listen to some high end cans. Really really liked the GradoGS1000s but they are very pricey, and as I did research on the companion amp, I got rather concerned that I was overpaying a bit, okay maybe a lot. But they sound sooo good.
So, can anyone recommend something that approaches the high end grado GS1000s without the crazy cost?
I've been suggested to consider the AKG K701 or the BeyerDynamic DT880 Pro, but there is no place to try them out. Might one of them be the closest comparison? And of course, what might be a good companion amp suggestion?
Clarity, transparency, etc. are very important to me. I found out I mostly dislike the Senns. uniformly as they seem to color the sound way too much for me. I want something pure and balanced, yet very dynamic. Don't like my carrots to mix with my peas, so to speak.
Recommendations please? Thanks

not a true answer, but if all things aren't an issue I'd probably buy some custom IEMs.

I love my Beyer 880's ... having heard a whole lot of others but, out of what I've heard they are the best!

Well, I'm the same way with clarity and transparency, I liked the Senns. somewhat and also the K701's were nice... but I decided on the Beyer 880's because of their clarity and how they don't color the sound! Some people think that they are bright, and they are in comparison to the Senns., but I really love them and by reading what your saying I think you would too!! Maybe try and find them from a store online or not that has a good return policy, that's about all I could add! If you search around you can find them a really great prices, got mine for $220!! Course I doubt I could have returned them.

Wow... I wish I could say that about anything!

I'm wondering what you play with your ipod... if it's mp3's then I wouldn't understand paying lots of money to be able to hear a lossy format. Many people say they can't tell the difference between a 128k mp3 and a cd... well, I personally don't think they would be able to tell the difference between $30 and $300 headphones then!

Anyway that's my little rant for now.
