hi guys,
i will 95% of the time use these headphones with my ipod and probably usually on the bus or in the car or something
Under these circumstances open headphones are a no-no.Loud background noises will force you to crank up the volume and you'd ruin your hearing this way within a few months.
Tinnitus or being partially deaf is no fun and therefor you have to avoid the Grados.IEMs are by far the best option as far as noise blocking is concerned but since you've stated you don't like them closed headphones are your only choice.Within your price range everyone and his brother will recommend the AKG K518 DJ (formerly known as K81 DJ).Should set you back about $80 or so, I'm not familiar with the american going price.
I think the l3000 needs to be mentioned at least once in this thread. Put's the w5000 and even w2002 to shame. AKA King of Rock this headphone cannot be messed with. It is at least tied with MDR-R10 as the best dynamic around. If you have the opportunity to listen or even buy, do it.

I've been trying lots of different types of headphones to find out what I like the best.
Here's what I prefer:
#1 AKG 701
The best sounding headphone i've ever owned so far. It's not for portable use unless you have an amp. I don't find these headphones comfortable at all. After a couple hours they make my head hurt. I almost regret not getting the Beyer Dynamic DT880 over these. Those look much more comfortable. Anyone prefer those over the AKG 701?
#2 Sennheiser HD-555
They work great with an Ipod and don't need an amp. They're very comfortable too. The only problem is that the plug just plain sucks. It randomly cuts out for a half second if I bump it. Another pair did this as well. I previously had the HD-580 and hated them, but I loved this pair. Wonder why..
#3 Grado SR-80
They're a little too bright to me and the music doesn't sound normal. I do like them but I HATE the design. They hurt my ears and the top of my head. You cannot possibly do any exercise while wearing this or they'll fall off. These are close to being tied with #2. Where do you get the flat pads for these? Worst design EVER in my opinion.
Don't laugh but I once had some of the original Bose Triports. Those were the most comofortable headphones i've ever had by far but they sound like crap compared to my latest headphones.
I've owned some Shure E3c's but immediately hated them! I have 4 other pairs of random earphones around i'll need to check out again.
The Audio-Technica ATH-EC700ti earphones seemed good, but i'll need to check them out again. It's funny that I paid $120 for them and I saw them the other day on radioshacks webpage for $249?!
Lately i've been considering getting some HD600's or the Beyer DT800's. Maybe check out the Koss PortaPros while i'm at it..
hi guys, this is my first post...i really need your help since i'm just in the states for a visit and am leaving for my country in a week. i wanted to get the best IEM's for my money. my budget shouldn't go beyond $320. I'm thinking about UM2's right now...but any other suggestions before i make my final decision? i've been using sure e3c's for some time and am looking for a worth it upgrade. hope to hear form anyone soon. i'll probably be placing my order by tomorrow. thanks a lot.
