These would be my first headphones..and it would be used out of my computer. I listen to Techno, and Rock, and Classic Rock. I watch movies sometimes and play games sometimes. I would be getting a amp/dac something like the total bithead, tho it would be atleast 3 months before I would get it.
I might just get the k81 and use that and just save for a amp/dac and then upgrade the headphones. gaaaaaaaaaaaar!
Audio Technica ATH-A900. They are the best unamped and out of a computer. Also, it matches your genres . You can't go wrong with them. They will be a GREAT first pair.

Grado SR-225
Xin SuperMicro IV (Received in Sept.)
I haven't heard that many phones, so my opinions are hardly authoritative. Given that disclaimer, here's what I have to offer to the thread:
* Phones I've heard that didn't work for me: hd595, px100, k701, gs-1000.
* My favorites:
Koss ksc75 - They're cheap, comfortable, and sound better than anything close to their price. I listen to them at the office when I can't use my e4.
Grado HP-1 - I bought these when they first came out. They're a bit uncomfortable and not the punchiest phones I've ever heard, but I frequently enjoy them for hours. I've got many years on them now and still love their sound.
AKG K1000 - This has become my quest for the perfect sound. I bought a used pair based on what I had read on Head-Fi. Initially, I was unimpressed with what I was hearing. They were expensive when I bought them, but the initial price turned out to be the lowest cost I would incur. Since I bought them I've:
replaced my dac
replaced my amp (twice)
replaced my interconnects
replaced the stock tail cable
(soon to) replace the main cable
So far it's been an expensive journey but I'm very happy with the result.
* Other phones I like:
Audio-Technica ATH-AD2000 - I heard these at a meet. Very nice!
Sennheiser HE90 - I heard the Orpheus system (both phones and amp) at the same meet. It's VERY sweet -- and nearly as nice to look at as it is to listen to. Also, I appreciate that the price of the Orpheus system makes me feel like a bargain shopper while I'm building my K1000 setup!
My opinions are based 90% on rock (acoustic, hard, alternative, classic, just about everything) and 10% on pop, rap, and reggae.
1 Grado - the more you spend the more you get ive tested up to the 225's and those are my FAVORITE phones i love these things.
just incredible for rock infact i doubt anything will beat this and i know others have agreed with me (such as headroom) these are punchy, detailed, and in-your-face, not relaxing and definitely not something youre going to fall asleep to
2 Sennheiser 580 - NOT ROCK HEADPHONES these are smooth, laid back, and i consider them boring. I seriously did fall asleep many times while listening to hard rock with these on (NOT SOMETHING ILL DO WITH THE GRADO's) Im definitely sticking with my grados for a very long time.
I dig that!
The Grado's that is!
To bad they are not closed though...
Before I make any definitive comments I'm gonna listen some more.

I've managed to break my AKG K26P headphone this morning (left channel seems dead). Even though I wasn't really unhappy with their performance, I'm not really sad to say goodbye to them..
I bought them a bit over a year ago because I needed small and portable headphones for in the train. Now I'm in the lucky position to work near my home at 20 minutes by bike. I will use my new headphones paired with a Creative Zen Vision:M and prefer not to carry an amp with me.
The case:
The best pair of cans to use while riding a bike. Blocking out riding wind would be a big plus.
- Headphones will be used with portable MP3 player, un-amped
- I don't mind bigger cans or less attrative design (up to a certain level )
- Budget isn't the biggest issue, but I'm not planning to spend hunderds and hundreds of euro's. Let's say a 150-200 euro max.
- Will be used for rock (stoner), Jazz and some Hip hop. Nice dynamics and bass are the most important traits I'm looking for.
When I was yonger, I first bought the 590's and they mannaged to stay alive 'till today, and boy, do they soung good..
3 week ago, I got the long awaited GS-1000. I've been waiting to them for 3 months (!!) the shop owner said that Grado could keep up with the production. They have lots orders from all over. I think they worth every penny and even more. defenetly the best audio product I came along with. and they can be amplified with a simple discman and still sound top-notch.
:gs1000smile:
I've got to say, the ATH-A700s are outstanding. $130 on amazon, so clear, no noticable coloration, alright unamped, mindblowing amped. Great, no matter what you are listening to.
As far as cheapos go, definetly the aiwa hp-x223, great lows, very comfortable. Too bad they're out of production. Mine have lasted me 2+ years.
Full size headphone: Sennheiser HD-580. Just an amazing headphone. The sound is just lush, 3-dimentional, and totally invoving without being fatiguing. I hear the air around instruments and they throw up an incredibly wide and deep soundstage. By no means do I mean to sound like any type of expert on this subject, and while I certainly haven't heard 'em all, when I have the HD-580's on my ears, I find I don't need to. That's about the ultimate compliment I can give any headphone. I am still searching for this type of sound nirvana in a portable, preferrably in-ear type of headphone. While I haven't yet found it, I have to mention the Koss Porta-Pro. This is the portable headphone that started it all for me. While it isn't perfect, what this all-star veteran does, it does very well. And for the cost, it continues to be a champ in my eyes. As far as the portables go, I own headphones from the Sony EX-71, The Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5EBs and most recently the V-Moda Vibes, and while the Vibes are an excellent set of phones, I still keep coming back to the Porta Pros because of all they do. Still on my list to try though are the Etyomic ER-4Ps. I have heard great things about these headphones and that may hopefully be where my search for my one favorite in-ear headphone may finally come to an end.
