Default Planning an Upgrade Path with Father's Day Looming

Here's the background: I didn't get my dad a Birthday present back in February. About a month ago, I had him try my 595s and he couldn't stop raving about them. I was thinking about giving him my 595s for Fathers day to make up for the birthday thing. Also, I saw this as an excuse to upgrade.

But, I don't have tons of money. I definitely don't have 160 bucks to drop on a father's day present. So here is what I am planning:

I trade my 595s for 555s and some money for an amp. He isn't an audiophile by any means, but he really liked the 595s.

Then I buy a k701 and some sort of amp to fit between the k701s and the 0404 I have.

So here's my question: Would that be a bad thing to do for an extra 70 bucks or so of money to spend on a worthy amp to drive k701s? Is the 555 a worthy substitute for the 595? Do they fit the same? Are there any 555 owners who would be willing to trade up?

I'd say, as a poor student too, take that money, buy your dad something nice. Don't be a cheap person and give him something used.

yup. Don't cheap out on your father's birthday. And he won't cheap out on yours.

Quietly suggest that you need a Stax Omega II setup to perfom well in school (also suggest that both of you can enjoy that setup).

Me, on the other hand - my parents don't understand all these fascination with headphones and my parents will beat me into next week if I asked for something like that.
