Oh... have you ever heard the term "walkman" before?

I think that question is better put to Sennheiser, AKG, and Beyerdynamic.

I used to have the eggos. I think they strived for a right down the middle kind of sound, something that was pleasent and fairly honest. The bass instruments were put in the very back of the room though.
I'll see how the k81's compare to that.

Thats pretty much my opinion of them too, though its over 1 year since i had them. I found them to be very uninvolving and sold em after a few weeks. Also i would NEVER wear them outside, they just look too creepy..

That might be, but I specifically mentioned closed phones - which would rule out IEM's. And I hate IEM's.
OK I'll admit that the walkman was at least as big a development as MP3 players, but I don't think the walkman had the breadth of influence that the Ipod does. From Itunes transforming the recording industry selling billions of dollars a year, to MP3 players used to replace car stereos and even home stereos, the entire music industry faces transformation to a much greater degree than what happened with the walkman.

Sony invented music -on-the-go concept. That's far more important concept than digitalization of existing platform. Sony was to invent portable radio transistor, the earphone itself, compact disc player, etc.
Now let's compare that to ipod. Ipod is NOT even the innovative leader of mp3player. There have been many hard-drive and flash digital players before ipod with better features and functions. Actually these companies prior paved the way for ipod to come in with right software and hardware. Dissing the walkman in 20th century is pretty naive in my opinion.

I have a pair of AKG 26ps, too me the bass on those sounds like it was murdered and left to fester in the sun (bloated). Can anybody with both pairs tell me whether they think th 81 djs correct this problem enough to warrant spending $100 (canada) on these?
thx

you're either very young or not that bright .anyone over 20 knows that sony was the pioneer of portable audio. to the best of my knowledge Itunes just sold its billionth track after a number of years of operation, and it is quite clear that apple takes a big bite out of the $.99cost (probably as much as their computers, 40% markup). Apple and Steve "the spindoctor" jobs simply identified a growing trend, and with a considerable advertising campaign, marketed a lackluster (at best) product to the masses. apple revolutionized nothing, they simply tied the best bow on their package.
sorry to be off topic, but the trolling of ipod fanboys just boils my blood.

Maybe I'm "not that bright" but at least I can read. Show me where I said that Sony wasn't the pioneer of portable audio? Every other comment you've made has nothing whatever to do with the points I raised.
Oh and by the way, this "ipod fanboy" troll doesn't own an Ipod - I use a SONY HD-5. And of course that's also entirely besides the point of my observations of the massive Ipod phenomenon. For someone who freely challenges the intelligence of others, you seem to have a sadly limited capacity for critical thinking. Why don't you put on your headphones and go read a book?

A little too harsh
I admittedly may have been too strong in my phrasing, as someone who frequents tech sites on a regular basis, I so regularly come accross rampant ipod fanboyism and it really has begun to bother me. I think the 5gen ipod i a very good player, great form factor , great sound. In my defense you did say that itunes brings in billions of dollars to the recording industry when they have just passed the 1 billion songs sold mark, whether you were implying that a large number of residual sales of music have stemed from this site, is for you to clarify.admittedly I do jump on people when they they make assosiations between ipods and innovation, because they have been followers thus far but have simply, done a better job of marketing their product.

Whatever, I never claimed that Ipods were innovative either. You seem to have picked a fight with me based on things I didn't say but were entirely in your imagination.
Go fight another windmill Mr. Quixote, and lets get this thread back on topic. Especially since I'm expecting my K81DJ in the mail tomorrow!
