Cool My KSC35 Kramer Mod **warning 56k, 10 x 800-600 pix**

I wanted to replace the black plastic driver guard with some kind of wire mesh. So I went to my local ACE Hardware and had a looksee. Oddly enuff they had a Kitchen area with stuffs, and I found the PERFECT THING ... a bacon splatter screen, $5.

US Dime for mesh comparison

I used a Deep Pink Sharpee to draw a outline

Disassembling of the Splatter Screen

Once the handle is removed it's easy to push the mesh out

I used the white plastic handle to flatten out the edges so I could start cutting

I used a Dremel to take out the inner guard

Used a hot glue gun to attach the mesh. Side by side comparison.

Side profile

Finished KSC35's

Nice! Sweet looking mod...how's it sound?

(thinking this could be good on my KSC75s)

Hi!

Nice looking, but when I did this years ago, the fully open driver sounded really bad - Large peak around 3-5 kHz and slow, not very clean sound overall. The bottom octave lost presence and the balance was not just screwed, it was simply way out!
I think the plastic protector serves also for acoustic pressure-tune purpose and by removing it and replacing with something simply open with no added acoustic resistance must affect the sound. But in this case, not the right way.

Its a big improvement than the stock guard and foam. They are alot less bass/mid-bass muddy. The upper mids and highs really open up, they are almost as detailed as the KSC75's.

ATM I am listening to alot of RUSH flacs. Geddy's bass guitar really comes through and Neil's bass kick, but not overly. The bass is still very much there, cleaner sounding IMHO, not as muddy as before.

The vocals and highs opened up quite abit. The 35's drivers do not have the same highend detail/impact as the 75's, but this mod really helped.

Really?! I noticed a overall cleaning of the sound from the lows through the mids and the highs got a lot of help. The low end before was a bit too much and muddy. The mids and highs before were laid back and not very detailed, but now they are really coming thru. I haven't noticed any peaks in the 3k-5k.

Hi Joshatdot!

The main thing is, if it helps you - keep it
But for me and few other people that heard my modded KSC-35 - it was clearly worse and simply put it broke the joy factor of them.

And one more issue - the original cover is shaped to be in equal distance from the dome of the driver diaphragm. If the mesh is flat - and from your pics it SEEMS flat to me - when you listen (even at moderate volume) - the diaphragm can hit the mesh and it causes distorting, ugly sound (worse than stuck hair)

For me, I modded them, but I left part of original plastic protector in place - only with drilled middle dome. Even later, I'm using the KSC-35 unmodded, only with different (shorter) cable.

But you should let your ears decide what's good or not.

I pressed/rubbed the wire mesh on the bottom of a glass bottle, or some jar, to give it a slight concave/bowl shape. Then I reversed it so it was rising above the driver.

Listening to them with my iRiver IFP-395T, I adjusted the EQ to +6db 3kHz & +6db 14kHz. They sound much better with abit of EQ'ing. I'll be using these as my main Portables.

Once I get my Canare plugs and cables I am goign to do this same Mod to my 75's and re-wire them with my Canare stuffs.
