Default MS1 Vs HD 580

How do the 2 compare to each other?

I`m wondering if the HD 580 sounds more musical..

ms1=grado
hd580=sennheiser

that should do it

but if that w'nt suffice:

ms1=upfront, brighter, narrower soundstage, imo less comfortable
580=wider deeper soundstage, mellower, laid back, imo real comfy

the senns get my bid for a far superior classical can and therefore more musical
i personally can't get into the grado sound because from the cans i've heard (60's 80's, 125's ms1s) they're too bright and cramped.

Apart from the "house sound", I think noone will doubt that the MS1 will sound better in all aspects than the HD580 if you don't have a dedicated headphone amp...
And "musical" is such a personal term, I don't think anyone can tell you which cans will sound musical to YOUR ears.

Yeah, that's a battle of the best-bargain titans, with two very different phones at the opposite ends of the design-philosophy spectrum. I have the HD580s and the SR60s and would not give either up, both are very worth having. It's all about personal preferences, and I prefer to have both!!! Many credible reports indicate the MS-1s to be a worthwhile step up from the SR60s, but I like my SR60s so much that I'm not gonna bother worrying about it.

I think this is a significantly over-reaching. I don't think the Senns really get 'dynamic' until you throw the power of a very good amp at it, but even off a decent soundcard, I could see some people preferring it. Although the MS1 is less Grato than SR60/80, it's still a Grado, and those highs will still bother some. Also the different midranges will just have different fans. Plus the Senn is likely more EQ-friendly, starting a bit more neutral. More room to find your 'spot'. I think the 'in all aspects' comment could give the wrong impression.

But I love the MS1.

i powered my ms1's straight from an ipod and it was fine.
i wouldn't dare do that with my then 580's and now 600's!!

if you want something more portable and all around in terms of wear and tear, i'd say go ms1.

you can't really lug the 580's around with you.

really depends on your situation. if it's a sit down one room headphone go 580.

imo it is a superior headphone for every type of music. but i am really into the senn sound
