Question Looking for replacement for D66 Eggos (when they pass on)

Now that the D66's have vanished from the realm of available purchase, I thought I should have a replacement plan for when my precious pair gives up the ghost. In fact, I've noticed the inner pleather rim of the fabric ear cups starting to flake off in places. Waah!

What do I use them for/with? They aren't travel headphones, remaining at home for listening out of my PC's Audigy ZS port, and some occasional wav file manipulation. I also use them for PCDP listening with a Xin MiniAmp V3. I really enjoy the sound they produce, and am hoping there's something available that is as close to their signature as possible. I've always liked the angled drivers in the Eggo design, as well as the single cord--less tangling opportunity when a fur-child wants lap-time while I'm listening.

Possibly helpful fit info: my D66's fit over my entire ears, and the headband just barely rests on top of my head when slid down all the way. Small cranial circumference, small ears. Just something to keep in mind regarding overall size/comfort of possible alternatives.

Suggestions respectfully solicited and gratefully accepted.

wow. I was surprised anyone else here has these headphones. Actually thats a pretty irrational thought to have, I remember they were all the rage on several forums when they came out. I bought a pair, and although one of the two springy-metal wires has broken, i still wear them every day. i wonder how many other people have d66s, and what they think of them....

im also curious in a replacement...bump

I can tell you what not to replace them with: the D777lp.

i replaced mine with a pair of D77 but they're difficult to come by nowadays. how about some audio technica ES7? not quite as comfortable and a lot more bassy but still a fun pair of cans nonetheless.

if you are curious about the D777 however, BH has them for $39.95 right now. here's the link
at that price, i'm tempted just to see if they really are a successor to the eggo line.

Thumbs down Survey says--!

The only difficulty with the AT line is that I'd have to order them to try them, most likely from Audio Cubes, and then go through the hassle of sending them back, which probably would be the case. I don't think they qualify as a truly good replacement choice for the D66's. (I look periodically on eBay for another pair, but it's like they've dropped off the face of the earth almost. )

From reading various posts/threads, I'm fairly sure the consensus is the D777LP cans don't pass muster as true successors to the Eggo line. Which is a bit depressing in and of itself. But then, if they were, my question/search would be answered a lot easier, wouldn't it?

Change is hard (sigh). Damn entropy! Away from my precious headphones!

Thanks for your input, though --

something else that occurred to me is that if youre only concerned about the pleather, buy any other eggo line headphone and simply transfer the pleather ring from that headphone to yours.

If you decide to go this route, let me know, ill pitch in for a part thats breaking on my pair.

amazon has the ES7 for $99 right now while audiocubes is still charging $129 for them. but either way, that's a hefty price to pay to try a pair of cans.

Arrow Good short term suggestion, but...

Problem with this is that the replacement source headphone would have to be another vintage Eggo--not the new line models, since the ear cups are shaped differently--and I'm just not finding them anywhere. Okay, wait, there's a D55 available now on Ebay, but it has four days left on bidding, and I just know it's going to go through the roof soon--I don't have the disposable income for such a purchase right now.

And, no, I'm not only concerned about the wear-and-tear on my D66's: I want to find a comparable type/model for when it's not just something cosmetic that dies. Even though I really don't care for the structure on the Grados, I'm almost considering the SR-80's. Almost. They aren't semi-closed like my nifty D66's, and they, well--okay, it's me, I admit it, but I think they're fugly. And I'm not sure if the mid-range would be as nicely proportioned with the "Grado sound"--I've heard descriptions going either way, so...I'm still hoping for other alternative suggestions. Actually, after reading a bit more, if I can get past the fugly factor, I'd probably consider a pair of Alessandro MS-1's, rather than the SR-80's.

If you can still locate the following headphones, their earpads should fit D66: Eggphones Review
