Holy cow these sound a LOT better recabled. Tighter and more defined... Not as sloppy all around. Mids are a little more forward and bass it tighter. Im sitting here A/B ing them with my millet and MS2. And the little koss still lacks that level of refinement and soundstage, but its a big step in the right direction. Brian Setzer orchestra is the material of choice.
Too bad the portability takes a dive.

i've always wanted to do this mod but i don't have the tools necessary to do this, nor do i have the skills to use a dremel or any powertools... anyone have a suggestion on how else i could make these holes? maybe i can get someone to recable + do this mod for me for some $$$?

Are you sure you put the grilles back together correctly? If you push them too far in, or if they are mis-aligned it may push on the driver diaphragm.
did you accidently bend / distort the grille?
You DID do this to a KSC75... right? I don't see one in your sig. If you did it ot a UR40... you're the first to do so. I can't recommend these mods for the UR40, since I have never tried it myself.
The mod, if done correctly, will do the opposite, increase treble and upper mids.

You'll propably get it here. Edit: KSC 12 doesn't exist there...
Necessity: IMHO depends on your ear's resolution abilities...or, if not, the power of your believe. For questions of that category, we have a seperate forum over here in Teutonia, which is called "Voodooism" (really)
-----
As this is the "mother thread", 2 general remarks:
- I guess the Koss lifetime warranty will be lapsing after torturings with a dremel. (I would like to be wrong with that opinion)
- The mod really works fine, but shorthaired people like me have to do almost daily "blowjobs" to keep the drivers in clean playing condition.

Let me double check tonight... I can't recall if I took the foam pad off a koss KSC22, 12, or 15 ? IMHO you can accomplish the same thing with a hole cut out of the OEM KSC75 earpad. The difference is very minor... noticeable IMHO but minor. If I had to quantify it, we're talking about a less than 5% difference.

i noticed the same change in sound when i recabled my ksc35 with canare. i ended up giving them away to my cousin but with my latest set, i've yet to recable them because of portability reasons. also the stiffness of the canare starquad made them a little bit uncomfortable after a while. at the moment, i'm really happy with the sound by just cutting a hole in the foam pads.

I noticed you were mentioning putting these in a different enclosure earlier in the thread, kramer. I have an old pair of V600s and either these KSC75s or the KSC35s whose drivers I'd like to experiment putting in the Sony headset. I have a soldering iron around somewhere. Is that all I need? Anyone know of a good tutorial or would someone mind instructing me how to do this mod? (i.e. where to solder what). Can't wait to list results here.

How soft is the metal used in the drivers? In other words, do you think my dad would be mad if I used his drill bits for this application, seeing as how he uses them oly for wood working?

Well the part that you have to drill is plastic, not metal. Wood bits should work with no problem.

Can I just use a phillips screw driver and screw a screw into the plastic to make the holes? I don't have access to a drill at this time.

I put some drivers in an MDRV6 earcup, and it was not too impressive. MDRV6 characteristic snarling mids combined with the somewhat conjested KSC sound = BAD combination. IMHO.
