Default K701/DT880/Pro 2500?

Hey Heads!

Need some Headphones for analytical work. Some I could afford:

AKG K701
Beyerdynamic DT880
Ultrasone Pro 2500

Unfortunenatly I have no possibilities to listen to all of them! Any recommendations? Pros, cons?

You are too reticent. Please tell us what is your source, do you have an amp (or are you willing to buy one ) and what kind of music do you listen to or are you going to produce/master ? AKG K701 and DT 880 definitely need an amp . For studio work maybe AKG 271S ? Anyway the more input you give the easier it is to give any advice.

Sorry...

Yes, I do have an amp (Technics SU-V470, by now).
Kind of music: Classical, Electronic, HipHop, Metal,...
Need some kind of "allround"-headphones to produce and (pre-)master this stuff.

The K701 is a very widely used reference monitor.

I used to own one of these before I gave it away not long ago since the SA5000 had the qualities I was looking for. The K701, from my understanding is 'supposed' to be a very neutral sounding headphone. From my experience these things don't have a whole lot of bass and it sounds very lean; but then again I wasn't driving it properly, it will change depending on your setup.

I don't have much to say about the DT880. For the Pro 2500, you should check out and read the big Ultrasone threads in this forum section before you go on with your questions. Here's one of them.
There's Something About Ultrasone...

I hope you can narrow down your sound preferences, and buy a headphone that suits you. Also try to audition them; it will help your end-decision making

Enjoy.

You must be kidding. Professional AKG headphones are : K240 Studio, K240 Monitor, K271, K141, K171

To the author - definitely Beyerdynamic DT880 Pro - flat, analytical, keeping transducers closer to your ears due to higher clamping force than the market version. The Technics will do the trick for these headphones, unless you need very loud listening about levels harmful for your hearing. Besides the K701's aren't IMHO suitable for any mastering/analytic work, they need powerful and well matched amp, otherwise you'll be pretty disappointed.

I had DT880, K701 -- I now have the new PRO 2500 and PRO 750 -- both of which I like better as a more realistic, neutral sound -- I sold the first two, and intend to keep the Ultrasones.

The 750 sounds a *bit* better on the highs than the 2500, otherwise they are fairly close.
Lovely bass and mids on both.
No part of the sound spectrum is "missing" in any way.

I auditioned both PROline models and don't agree, especially on the 750 model. It's obviously colored headphone, the 2500's are better in regards of timbral transparency and imaging but the S-logic is something, I wouldn't trust much for editing. Just my two cents. Of course, both Proline models are better for this purpose than the audiophile oriented K701's.

I agree with Majkel. I like the 750, but it is not the most neutral can out there. And I've never seen the logic behind S-logic. The 750 is a great can, but soundstage and imaging are better left to other cans out there. The 2500 IMHO has a boosted bass, coloured mids and slightly artificial sounding highs. For monitoring, I'd go with one of the AKG monitors (like the 240, 271 etc) or with a Beyerdynamic monitor such as the DT150 or DT250 (even though the 150 also has a slightly boosted bass region, but hey, it's a Beyer after all).
