After much debate, and scraping together of my limited funds (oh, the perks of being a college student), I have decided that I am going to make these my first pair of "real" headphones. I've always been stuck using those cheap $10/15 dollar ones because that was all that I could really afford to get, but no more.

However, I still have not figured out if these mods are something that I should do. Would people recommend that I listen to the headphones for a day or two, do a burn-in, and then decide whether I should mod them? Should I do things in a different order? Are the flaws of the headphones going to stand out to someone like me that hasn't developed their ear for picking these sort of things up?

Ultimately, it should be your ears that guide you, but to be honest, I can't recall anyone who has been disappointed by the modding. Also, unlike other types of modifications, these ones are completely reversible (on the RX900, at least. It doesn't look like you could put the felt back on the RX700, since there is no acoustic lens to hold it in place).

it is possible to reverse the dynamat? the thing is like tar to me, extremely hard to work with. especially when you work it in, the sticky substance kinda oozes out.

Oh yeah. I keep forgetting that I used Dynamat Original.

The Dynamat Xtreme would be more difficult to remove...

I just wanted to say thanks for the guide, TopPop. My RX700 came in today. I liked the sound pre-mod, but after finding this thread, I was able to remove a layer of felt from each driver, and now these phones are quite the rival to my AD700. It's marvelous!

You are very welcome! I'm glad that people are enjoying the modding process & results!

Stay tuned for another mod page, which will be more intensive and fairly irreversible (not for the faint of heart! ). I plan to cut the caps off of the cups, and replace them with metal grills... open RX900, anyone?

Alright, I appreciate your help. I am going to order them tonight. I hope I will have them sometime next week and I will come back with my impressions and whether I go through with modding them.

Really interested in a grill mod. Not really to do it as I'm very happy where I am now, but to see how it effects the sound, especially the bass/highs.

As far as removing Dynamat extreme, it isn't all that hard. Peel as much as you can off with the backing then roll whatever is left under your finger until it balls up (you maybe SoL in crevices though). I've actually been tempted to add another layer of extreme to the cup but just don't want to mess up what I already have.

Picked up a pair of 900's. I still need to break them in and then onto modding. Anyone thought of doing a re-cable? I have some Canare cable lying around that may make it onto the 900's.

If you do recable these, I will be very interested in the results.

The 11ft of mediocre cable attached to these cannot be getting the best out of these drivers, surely?

Might even do my first recable

I just tried out a little experiment, and I can say that I'm not going to try to turn the RX900s into open phones!

I unscrewed the driver housing, and then put the pads back on, making them completely open phones, just to see what it would sound like. Tried listening to a few tracks and I was not pleased. The muddied sound didn't go away from the mids, and the bass just lost some "oompf" and control.

Oh well...

TopPop: Many thanks for your pictorial guide, I almost gave up on these cans until I tried your mods and it changed things that needed addressing.

Now who's gonna be first with the recable?
