JVC HA-DX1 impressions
me again with the jvc's. i said i was done but got a great ebay price and so...
found almost zero info on these. these are '2nd highest' behind the dx3 in jvc's lineup (not counting the thousand dollar victors). they are 5-30k hz , 45 ohms, very large, cushy, isolating. gave these an overnight burn in 1st.
they claim a 3 way adjustable fit- the buttons at the top of the yokes allow the yokes to spread wide tho it seems a worthless feature as the angle when spread keeps the cups from lying flat against my head. the spring loaded headband adjuster is too weak and simply goes to maximum spread. this doesnt affect comfort to me tho. small heads might have a problem. wore them for a 2 hr gaming session and had no comfort issues
the sound is very good. very nice bass. tight sounding, large, doesnt overpower the mids and highs. mids and highs are very clean and clear. mids in particular are very sweet.these are also 'fast' in the bass dept. i tried out a speed metal thunping song (through the fire and the flames)and these came out the best i've heard.
i will compare these to my audio technica ath-a900 and jvc harx700s.
bass- the hadx1 has the best and tightest thump, the harx700 seems boomy and sloppy in comparison. the a900 seems slightly boomy in comparison but reaches a lower note and is warmer sounding.
mids- the hadx1 has the best mids of the group, much cleaner then the harx700, and slightly clearer than the a900 (which is a little recessed)
highs- no contest- the a900 rules this area. the hadx1 does reach plenty high tho, slightly better than the rx700.
comfort- the a900 is best, but they are all comfy
quality feel- all feel quality built- thos the jvc's cords are obviously cheaper than the a900's braided cord.
the hadx1 goes for 75$ shipped on buy.com. (i got mine for much much less). it's easily worth it in my opinion. the harx700 is still the value leader at 38$ shipped. but if your budget goes up to 75$ the jvc hadx1 is a great value and sound.

i tried these with an rca mp3 player and fiio amp, and also an x-fi with and without a creek obh-11 amplifier.
mostly with the x-fi/creek amp combination

decent, good for a closed can. not as large as the a900 but i noticed no problems in 3d sound while gaming. i played unreal tournament3 and battlefield 2142 with them so far. it handles the orbital strike in bf2142 beautifully!! (for those that dont know- the bf2142 orbital strike is the most punishing audio effect ever put into a game. multiple deep bass explosions going on around you-it rewards your nice audio setup and punishes the inferior ones)

bass has mellowed with use- like all jvc cans this will probably need a long burn in.
there seems to be a few layers of cloth over the speakers- i will probably open these up for some mod action soon

I eyed the DX1 and the DX3 a while ago but lost interest from lack of info on them. This review has sparked my interest nice job

now having spent some time with these.
the tight bass does a lot of justice to fast beat rock songs. its not boomy whatsoever. if u want boomy- the harx700 is a better option.
while gaming-these are my preferred cans for playing Left 4 Dead. the tight bass does shotgun blasts well, the clean mids are good for all the voice comms. i prefer these over my ath-a900 in this game. however -in unreal tournament 3 - a boomier bass works better and the ath-a900 wins over.

i have had many peeps ask about comparing these to the rx700 and rx900. never had the 900 until now.
the rx900 has slightly more bass and boomier. the hadx1 has much much better mids and highs. the hadx1 is definately superior

Hopefully you can answer this, how would you say these compare to the AD700/900 line of ATH cans?
I ask because for quality cans the only ones I have tested/used are AD700 and Senn HD555. I did not mind the sound of the 555's but it wasn't completely my cup of tea (and neither was the comfort) but I really liked the AD700, I love their tight bass and actually like the fact it wasn't boomy (perfect for the old rock and other genre's I listen to). It also had a nice midrange (only a bit weaker in the lower midrange register) and I liked the highs (although my ears have had a slight stuffy feeling since I wore the phones so maybe a bit to much treble). I LOVED THE SOUNDSTAGE!! From what I have read in this thread these JVC cans almost sound like the perfect can for me sound wise.
Also how much do these isolate? I ask because my wife is ready to kill me because I can't hear her when I am wearing my IEM's so I actually have been focusing on the Open Air phones so I can hear my family better (and for the larger soundstage as well). I hope these are not superior noise blockers.

they are closed cans, but not extremely isolating. they dont squeeze airtight on your head but are comfy and partially isolating
i have had the ad700. the hadx1 had much more bass and the mids are a lot more forward. the ad700 has airier high notes.
i didnt care for the hd555 either

hmmmm, I think I will have to seriously consider these then if I don't like the Philips HP910, I have coming in (another low cost but high SQ open headphone from what I am reading).
Are these as fast and detailed as the AD700 and how is heir soundstage in comparison to the AD700?
One last set of questions. How warm do these get (I liked the AD's because they did not seem to get to hot)? What is the material the pads are made out of (I'm not a huge fan of the fake leather but I also found the AD700 material to be a bit itchy)?
Sorry for all the questions but I want to ensure I am getting the best bang for my one time shot as possible.
BTW these can be had at Overstock.com (for Canadians) for a very good price and in the US even cheaper from one of Amazon's affiliates.

these are very fast headphones. the highs are not as detailed as the ad700 and soundstage not as large. however the bass and mids are much better. the pads are pleather. they are loose fitting not tight- my ears dont get hot.
