HP-2 Repairs
I just sent my HP-2s to Joseph Grado to have the drivers replaced. I can't believe I was standing on the cable when I stood up and damaged them. According to Mr. Grado, you don't just break the connection where the cable is connected, the actual plate where the cable is soldered is normally ripped. This can't be repaired so you have to replace the driver. Since they are matched, both drivers need to be replace.
The one interesting comment he made was the "Ultrawide cable" was specifically designed for the HP-2s and his experience is any after market cable just muddies the sound. However, he is down to one cable left.

At least the drivers can still be replaced!
Concerning the cable, the ultrawide reference job is my favorite for the HP-2.

In a way you should be thankful it happened now. The headphones will electrically be as good as new. So you can expect at least another decade of use from them. Joe won’t be fixing these forever and he will eventually run out of parts. So it was fortuitous that you damaged them while they can still be fixed.
I felt honored to have Joe Grado personally repair and check my headphones when I sent them in for work. I really only wanted to get a pair of Flat Pads.
Oh yeah don’t send them to him with anything other than flat pads on them. If you don’t have flat pads them send the headphones in without any pads. Joe doesn’t like to have his design messed with. He’s proud- as he should be of what he created.

Now I find out. I was going to send them without any pads but ended up putting a pair of bowls on. He'll probably refuse to fix with the bowls.

“He'll probably refuse to fix with the bowls.”
When I called him about working on mine and I mentioned I was using modified Senn Pads he told me I was **** out of luck and he wasn’t going to fix them for me if I wasn’t going to use them correctly.
It’ll be interesting. Tell him you just used the bowls to protect the headphones during shipment?
Maybe he’s mellowed out a little with retirement?

At least they are Grado bowls and not the competitors'. I actually just found a pair of flats I had stored in one of my Grado boxes as I was deciding how to package them for shipment.

I talked with Mr. Grado the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and he was going to repair them the following Sunday he hoped. What was interesting was he saidt he had 4 pairs in for repairs.
Does anyone else have their HP-2 in for repair? He must not have finished them as I haven't received them back yet.

Why, whatever could he have a problem with? Just a lil recable here, a lil headband pad thingy there, a bit of stuff over the driver housings there, a bit of fluff 'tween the ears...oh nm. I just better never break 'em!

Woah, late reply. I thought you'd run a search on your name once you come back to your computer...

jeebus.. jahn, do the sound better? Because people always say that the HPs are bliss and joe seems to only like flats on them... i find it almost hard to beleive that such extensive modding would improve it? I dunno why though, since i'd happily beleive it would improve the ms-2

Nah. I respect the guy for having pride in his design. If I had the brains and skill to make something this great, I'd be pretty pissed at others modding it too.

Why though? Because it doesn't fit what you (or him) originally thought to be perfect or optimal? So what if other people like it a little different? No offense to either of you, but it sounds a little...arrogant? Conceeded?
