Damn, I don't even own those phones and it's a REALLY good read. You're REALLY passionate about this hobby to go through all that. My kudos to you.
Also, you ever wonder what that mod, or a mod as similarly as you could get to it, would do to a DT770???? I'm sure the Dynamat had a LARGE portion to do with the SQ changing. Dynamat works WONDERS in cars, I can only imagine what it does to "small speakers" in really close proximity to your ears.
Again....a major kudos for that.

Markl, any updates as to whether you'll be doing the mods for other people?

Roughly speaking, as the math goes.

I'd still like to hear what other R10 lovers think of these modded Denons. What about some of you L3000 lovers? How do the markl mods stack up to your favorite cans? And what about comparisons with other closed cans in roughly the same price range, like the W5000s? Surely one of you D5000 modders also has the W5000s to compare with.

I think I've read one post here that said the Modded D5000's (He referred to them as MD5000's) were better than the W5000's. I'll try to find it somewhere...
Edit
Here we go
AT W5000 or Denon D5000 or ???

I'm resurrecting this post to know if any of you mates has tried the full Mark's mod on his D5000, and what do you think about it.
I'm waiting for a pair of D5000 and will try the mods. It'd be interesting sharing some opinions on it.
Regards

I did it, everything but the patches of dynamat on the sides of th baffle, with the holes punched in it. I re-cabled with 22G Jena wire too. I put more fiberloft in the earpads and almost none in the cups.
Been meaning to post pics and words but haven't had time.
In short, I can't fault these things, they're like a completely different can to before the mods.
I didn't mind them before but love them now.
There was a tiny bit of harshness at the very top with sibilant recordings but that's gone away with 150+ hours of constant burn in so far.

i know dreadhead did the full markl mod on his new denon d5ks. i think he did them very quickly, like in a matter of hours. he also liked how they sounds after the mod, and prefers them over his hd650s. he'll chime in soon enough

Thanks Steven, glad to know the mods worked and you're liking the results. I must say that my pair has been already modded by Markl, those are the HPs I'm waiting for. Hopefully by next week they should be here.
AFAIK Markl will mod the D5000 and will change his status at Head-fi as member of the trade (MOT). I don't know if his new status allows him to comment this matter in this thread.
Regards.

Just want to say thanks to Markl for the great work done here. I did most of this mod to my D2000's and the improvement is immense. They were supposed to be my work-only headphones but I find myself lugging them back home most nights to supplant my HD650's. Thanks again Markl!

The mod usually takes me about 4 to 4.5 hours. But you need to be pretty anal about how you cut those holes so they correspond to the holes perfectly in the rear of the driver. I also highly recommend taking a small screwdriver and using the flat surface of the blade to compact the Dynamat down nice and tight, You really need to work at it again and again, spreading it like very very stubborn frozen butter so it adheres fully and completely without any air pockets. This gets to be a major pain in the behind when working the rubber around the air holes. A pain, but well worth the result.

markl as MOT? that would be the day! i'm really interested in doing the markl mod, but sadly i think i have 2 left hands or 11 fingers
it would be awesome to have a markl modded d5ks done by markl himself!
