Damn, so tempted. However, live in Canada and won't be back in the US until this Christmas. :/

So do these mods make the D5000 as good as AKG?
If it does maybe I can try it myself and help modify the mods so it gets similar improvement with less work where even non-DIYer can do it, then you don't have to go through the trouble of becoming MOT.

I thought the mods were very easy to do.
Maybe getting all the parts puts people off it?
I did about 80% of the mod and I still feel the bass needs a little more improvement- so I will do the rest of it later tonight.
But thanks for sharing your findings!

Darn it, you guys made me buy another pair of headphones I don't need. I won't get to see them for a while, but still...spending money I don't have.

My modded pair just arrived on today's mail. Everything OK, just played a tune to see they work well.
Interesting, very first impression is of a very balanced sound, kind of "bold" tonally and quite open and airy spacially.
Since I don't think they have more than a couple of hours of burn-in, I'll be playing them for the next days before making any judgement.
Mark did a great job preserving the lettering on the cups. No one would say those cans have undergone some surgery. Just for the pads being thicker and a bit harder on touching the skull than what I recall from the stock ones, but still very comfortable.

And if we told you we like to drink blood, it's our fault when you bite your girlfriend's neck? Wait, that didn't come out right...

I've tried another mod, in addition to the ear pad mod. I put a some foam near the back part of the pad, but so it touches the ear. It angles the drivers further in front of my ears and pushes the drivers away from them as well- resulting in a huge increase in soundstage, does not compromise bass either.
I am still debating if I like it or not. It works well for some music like jazz and classical. But vocals seem to be too far away for rock oriented music. I need to find a way to make it easy to attach and to remove, so I can tweak it for different music.
Update: removed the foam.

Hey, markl. I'm getting ready to dive back in and update the mod (if you don't remember, I'm one of the first to do the original). One question on the foam that you added on top of the Dynamat... are you using anything to make it stay in place? The picture makes it look like it's sticking to something but I can't find anything in the directions that verifies this.
