HFI-680 vs HFI-780 - key sonic differences ?
I have a pair of recabled HFI-780 that I use as my primary home headphones. I like these quite a bit.
I'm on the lookout for nice sounding headphones for portable use that offer decent isolation and are comfortable. I've owned the following in the past:
D1000 (nice sounding, extremely comfy, poor isolation)
HD25-1 II (decent sounding, not so comfy, great isolation)
ES7 (decent sounding but < than the above, not comfy, poor isolation)
ESW9 (nice sounding but a bit mellow for my tastes, not comfy for extended listening, poor isolation)
There isn't a lot of data here on the HFI-680. On paper and based on some comments here, they seem to be a less bassy (and perhaps more neutral) version of the 780. Apart from the bass, what are the other differences between the 680 vs 780 ? Specifically how are the highs, midrange and soundstage. My other concern is the size of these for transportation. Any inputs would be appreciated.
Also, if you have other suggestions for a good sounding, closed headphone for portable use would be appreciated.

If you have got a re-cabled 780s why do you want to step down?

The 780s especially after the recable have lost portability. Looking for a nice portable headphone to take with me to work, trips etc. The 680s are cheaper as well.
Also, is it a step down ? Some seem to prefer the more neutral 680 over the 780s.

That's the reason I would always get the re-cable done to about 1.2 to 1.5 meters. Even I've requested my stock cable to be cut to 1.2M so that I could carry them on the go. Its perfect in reaching my iPod.
And now with regards to your original post, I've got any clue over the 680s signature. Keep your eye on, some 680s might pop out in a bit.
I've still got my old 650 trackmasters which I like and use them occasionally and they too have got a 1.5M cable.

Just stumbled across this thread. I think the HFI-680s are good for the price if you consider the sound quality, build quality, and the amount of noise attenuation they provide. Unfortunately I do not have the 780s to compare to, but through other peoples comments on this forum it has more bass and a perhaps a slightly more forward midrange.

I read the guy said they sounded to sibilant and made highs very painful.
Will it be safe to say this is less of a problem with the 780?

Yep, based on my PL650 the are more neutral and balance in the bass and highs. But you need around 500 hours burn in time...

Does the HFI 680 have the same kind of forward midrange presentation as the 780 ?
