Default Help the noob, HD-280s or sony 7506s?

Hello

After looking at some old threads on here and talking to a few friends, I have decided on either Sennheiser HD-280s or Sony 7506s (same as the V6s, right?). I am after some headphones mainly for DJing, only a beginner at this stage but need better cans than my current Sony MDR-V200s, which are crap. I need headphones that block outside sound well, as I tend to mix with my headphones on all the time (unlike others who prefer the one-ear 'listening to the speakers' method). I tried my mate's HD-280s and thought they were brilliant - blocked out lots of sound and were so clear - my mixing improved immediately. I tried a direct comparison in the sony shop in christchurch between the HD-280s and the 7506s, and thought they were very similar, maybe the sonys being a bit punchier. I don't know much about headphones, but they both sounded great.

Anyway, for those of you with experience with either of theses headphones, which one would be better in the long run? I can't afford anything more expensive (like the HD-25s). I deal mainly with house (if that makes a difference) and want some headphones that will also be good with my discman.

Input welcome

And also, anyone know good companies that ship cheap to NZ? HD-280s are like US$250 here (!). Sonys are cheaper at about US$130

Something to note:

HD-280's don't have a lot of bass

V6's have shrill highs

And the V6 is more portable if that matters...

Default Have Heard Both

I was in a similar situation when I purchased my first pair of headphones. I wanted closed, full sized, decent price. I got a pair of burned in HD280's for $60 from the forums and I really liked them. The only thing was, they aren't so portable. Also, they really clamped on my small head (they provide excellent isolation), but that was just me.

I ended up getting a pair of Sennheiser PX200's after I sold my HD280's, but I definitely recommend them. While I'm sure some might be able to, to me the sound of the PX200's wasn't really that much different, if at all than the HD280's....the HD280's just provided more isolation.

I went with the HD280's over the 7506's because I thought they sounded better and were constructed better. Definitely get beyer pads if you go with these (7506's). Both are great cans though.

I would say, try them both on, listen to both if you can, and make a decision, for the price you are getting good bang for your buck..

I have owned both and used both for DJing, and the Sony V6/7506 is a much better phone for that purpose. I enjoyed the HD280s for computer mixing/leasure, but spraying some silver paint on them doesn't make them DJ phones.

Cheers for the responses

I'm not worried about portability too much, I realise the 280s are bulky!

From the feel of the two, the 280s seemed to have better isolation (may have been because they are bulkier), but I only tested them in a quiet showroom.

A question for nierika (or anyone else) - do the sonys provide good isolation too? If it's roughly comparable to the 280s, then the sonys sound like the better headphones for my purposes.

Also, what's the deal with beyer pads? How much do they cost and would they be readily available in lil'old NZ or would I have to order them in?

Good isolation, yes (somewhere around -16dB). Not as good as the HD280s but good enough for DJing.

The HD280Pro/Silvers claim to be able to attenuate 32db..although when the music is off...you can hear a lot of outside noise
