I'm sure the SR225 really does sound good amped, and it's great that you love yours. I probably would already have owned one had I not thought it likely to find it uncomfortable and lacking in deep bass strength and extension (I'm somewhat of a basshead).
I developed my opinions of the SR225 from reading the opinions of first hand owners of the SR225. I'm sure many find the bass of the SR225 at least adequate. However, it's really not hard at all to find first hand accounts of those who deemed the SR225's bass less than.
I've read the arguments for and against the bass of Grados in general in a few threads, but it always comes down to personal preference. And after having experienced the deep, tight bass strength and extension of the Ultrasone Proline 650, I now doubt I will ever buy another Grado.
I am finally getting back to this thread. I just wanted to say that it is not only the bass but the sounds of drums, cymbals and guitars that made me fall in love with grados. I guess you could call it coloring but they reall have a way of making these intruments sound exciting and involving. I am always tapping my toes when I listen. My 580's made me feel bored. That is probably why I will never get a pair of 600's or 650's. There are a lot more headphones out there for me to try but now I am spoiled by the grado sound so I am not sure if I will like them.

Generally speaking Senns have a much more relaxed sound than Grados. So for those not wanting an in your face presentation, Grados would not be a good choice. And for those only wanting the Grado type of sound, own Grados.
Solutions I use to get my HD580 to sound more engaging and exciting are 1) mod it and 2) turn up the volume. But then I find it also does well when I want to use it for relaxing or watching movies.

I wound up turning up the volume too. Then I realized I was just trying to make them sound like my grados. So, I sold them.

I was listening to some music last night and it sounded like I was sitting right next to the tambourine. I could swear if I closed my eyes I could tap the guy on the shoulder. Awesome.I just recently bought some amperex gold globes made by mullard blackburn that make the music come alive. My little SOHA amp is really quite impressive.

Yes, turning up the volume does make Senns sound more exciting, and so does amping them. And I don't blame you as I surely would have sold Grados had I tried or expected them to sound like Senns.
Senns seem to get recommended much more often than Grados, especially for gaming and movies. Grados of course have their niche, but definitely are not as utilitarian as Senns.
True. They are not the most comfortable, but they do sound great. I got lucky with my 225's. They are pretty comfortable. I can listen for hours with no discomfort at all. Plus how often do people listen for more than a couple of hours anyway?

Again, it's great that you love your Grados. However, the frequency with which people listen to headphones for more than a couple hours at a time is irrelevant to anyone wanting cans to listen to for several hours at a time, even if this is only done periodically. Of course anyone not expecting to listen to headphones for more than a couple hours would be more likely to not find Grados all than uncomfortable. I probably place a higher priority on comfort than most Grado owners, and prefer wearing more comfortable cans and regardless of how long they're on my head.
