I like what I read about the SR225's strengths, but I have not owned one primarily due to how uncomfortable my SR80 was and also because I think I'd find the SR225 lacking in deep bass strength and extension.
Well, the housing of the cans is quite small compared many other open headphones and other headphones from the Grado family so that's more or less to be expected. Bass can only go that deep with such a small housing.
As for comfort, I find them more comfortable than my HD600 because they rest more lightly on my head and ears. But that's just me.

Yes, I agree. Grados by design are not the best choice for everyone, especially if wanting a strong, tight, and extended deep bass. This is what I consider a strong point of the Ultrasone Proline 650. However, I can't imagine a majority finding Grados more comfortable than the top tier of Sennheisers.
Yes, but make sure you get flat pads. That will also ensure they won't be painful (metaphorically and physically) or to bright.
Trust me, if you listen to rock or metal (or anything ), steer clear of the HD580 like a glowing hot nail in the road.
From what I've read flat pads on Grados are not comfortable, so that would not seem to be a good choice for the OP who needs comfortable cans for all day use. Or, is there something new going on with Grados lately that I've missed?
Of all the cans I've owned, my favorite for loud rock music is my modded HD580; however I do not recommend it for the OP considering his stated preferences.
Man, I'm starting to think the SR225 isn't the phone for me either.
But then again, maybe they are. Since you are in Raleigh, you could try to contact Drew from Moon Audio in Holly Springs. He sells a lot of brands (Grado,AKG,...) so that you could try some of those phones with your ears...

Wtf?! You're giving suggestions on comfort about headphones you've never worn and possibly swaying andy's purchase?!!
The flat pads are very nice on grados. No, they are not the D2000 which actually feels GOOD to be wearing, but they don't feel bad at all, and I wear the HP1000 (which is about 7 times the weight of the SR225) with flat pads for many hours at a time and do not have the slightest discomfort. That, and the Grado headbands are EASILY bendable, and once you've broken in the flat pads and bent the headband just right, the grados go from "just all right" in comfort to "surprisingly comfortable".
The bowl pads on the other hand literally cause my ears to become raw and bright red and extremely painful after 20 minutes of wearing them, even when the pads have been given the shampoo treatment several time (not the mention they sound like arse).
The SR225 with flats is seriously the only headphone listed here that will be the best for the op, IMHO. And I still have a funny feeling in my stomach seeing the HD580 close behind the SR225 on the poll.
I wonder how many other people in this thread have actually worn and listened to all the headphones in the poll. Admittedly I have not listened to or worn the AD900, but I have owned the AD2000 (same design as AD900, just different drivers) and if the AD900 sound signature is similar I wouldn't recommend it over the SR225+flats.

1Time: What is your purpose in this thread? Contribute with useful information or question the useful information given? I wouldn't recommend him anything unless I thought it would be the best headphone to get. If I can't contribute in any way to a thread - I usually don't post.
If I was to recommend something blindly, I would have to be so sure about what I was saying in order to not loose credibility. The Grado pads is a well debated issue and it's been said alot of times in the past that the flats are the most comfortable pads for Grados.
It's andy43 who should do the questioning.
Again, as 003 said above, with proper adjustment and a few weeks of use they will be very comfortable and rest very lightly on your head. I can wear them for very extended periods of time (however, I vastly prefer my GS1000, but that's a different discussion and priceclass all together).
I'm strictly a headphone guy so I would never recommend a IEM. I never liked the idea of putting things into my ears.

Tell me more! I can actually go to his house and try headphones?

That is precisely what I believe you could do, I am not 100% sure, since I was not there (yet). Anyway, you can certainly check the web site. You might also be interested in the upcoming NC meet.
