It goes on sale from time to time for ~$150 at different places. I think the last sale I saw was at guitarcenter.com. alwayslowest.com for $146.28 + shipping. I quickly found this bargain through google and then stopped looking. There always seems to be places competing to sell it for $~150. You may want to check this site out at resellerratings.com before buying. This same site also sells the 0404 PCI for $93.06 + shipping; however I'm not sure how well the 0404 PCI would substitute for the 0404 USB.
The HD580 is in the lead, which is really surprising. I don't know whether or not it's because it's the most popular on the list, or what. I've heard that its bass isn't the tightest and that it's not the best choice for rock.
Second up, the Grado. I'm liking the looks of the SR225, but a bit worried on the comfort and how fatiguing it is.
I listen to rock, metal, electronic, and some hip-hop as my main music....-Tight, punchy bass that reaches low... can't stand flubby, overpowering mid-bass....Not too bright: I listen to music pretty much all day long, so I don't want my ears to be all worn out by the end of the day.....Mids good: Mids are important, as vocals are my thing. The guitars should stand out pretty well, too.
Ok that is a calling for the SR225 with flat pads. Dear god why is the sennheiser HD580 in the lead?

My vote goes to the modded 580. The Grados are too bright and uncomfortable to wear all day. The 701s come very close to meeting your list; they have good mids and highs and they are comfortable. However, while their bass is tight and extended it is really not punchy. I think that the all-around abilities of the 580 best meet your stated requirements.

I just wanted to say that the 580's are a bit laid back compared to the 225's. With the 580's I felt like I was about 20 rows back in the audience compared to front row for the 225's.

My only concern for you with a modded HD580 + a $200 amp would be whether you'd find its bass low and tight enough to meet your expectations. When I think of cans with a deep and tight bass, the HD580 is one of the last that come to my mind.
And, based on what I've read I doubt a Grado would be found comfortable to wear all day; however a Beyerdynamic would.
I love hard guitar blues. Sold my 580s because they sounded bad to me compared to even the SR60s. I'd love a chance to hear the 225s. My AD900s are also much better FOR ME than the 580s were, and they (900s) are great for the jazz and pop vocals I also listen to).
